Wylan knew all too well how to play with fire—as a chemist, as a tanner’s apprentice, as his father’s son, he had to be familiar with it—but this was a new kind of risk, leaving his heart exposed on the damp cobblestones to be stomped on. It was idiotic, he knew, to intentionally let himself be wounded in the Barrel. Things tended to get infected here, and people preyed on weakness like sharks.
But he had been alone, been lonely, for so many years, long before he’d emerged from a freezing canal and found himself at the bottom of the Barrel. He needed this, and even if it was going to burn him, even if it was a poorly constructed bomb just waiting to implode, Wylan found that he didn’t much care.
At least he’d have been warm and wanted for one night in his miserable, saintsforsaken life.

“Suspected serial killers,” was on the lips of the anchor, but she added that the Stadwatch had no credible leads or descriptions of the suspects beyond a profiler’s guess they were probably white men, middle aged and unmarried or divorced with troubled childhoods. “If you know anything, please call 1-800…”
Wylan glanced at the phone on the nightstand beside him.
He let his head roll back and fall against the headboard, closing his eyes. He wondered if the Stadwatch would ever catch up, and if they did, would they just trade these cuffs for another set…
Or: In modern day Kerch, 23-year-old Wylan has run away from home and his abusive father. He's hitchhiking between Ketterdam and Belendt when he's picked up by two men calling themselves only "Miggson" and "Prior." What he doesn't know at the time is the men are serial killers on a cross-country roadtrip, and worse than taking his life, they steal it from him. There doesn't seem much point to surviving in the weeks that follow, until one night when Wylan is sent in as a lure for Miggson and Prior's next intended victim: Jesper Fahey.

“Paperwork to be drawn up…?” Jesper offers a cheeky grin, but he’s clearly off-kilter. His fingers tap against the smooth varnish of the bedpost, brush through his hair, touch his revolvers, twirl the rings in his long fingers. His silver eyes are roving over Wylan’s face, searching, reading, before he takes a breath. “I meant what I said you know, I will help you. If you'll have me,” he adds sheepishly.
It makes Wylan’s toes curl.

Jesper watches it, mouth open as everything he’d assumed shatters and comes back together in a new shape. “You’re a prisoner!” he blurts out.
Wylan twists sharply to look at him, face creased in a familiar aggravated scowl. “Are you an idiot?” he demands. “The locked door wasn’t a clue?”
There are new weapons appearing in the Barrel. Kaz sends Jesper undercover to find out where they’re coming from. Jesper finds something else entirely.

He can’t think of anyone in Kaz’s employ who would be cut out for an undercover job on the Geldstraat - Nina, maybe - but that person is certainly not him. All the same, the request was simple enough. The rumour is that someone tried to assassinate Jan Van Eck’s son, Inej had told him, and now he’s asking around for a Barrel bodyguard. Jesper happened to fit the job requirements.

He’d paired that with a battered up pair of All Stars, but Wylan wasn’t one to comment on fashion choices, what with his shapeless sweaters and big scarves.
He smiled at him through his window, and the boy smiled back when he caught him staring.
