So ridiculous, all of it. Severus knew the real Potter was the one that hexed him in the hall, that beat him down like routine until his skin became more purple than white— the one that made him lose a thousand different ways. Just like his mother.

Eileen froze. She had heard him spit venom before, had endured his fists and his cruelty, but this—this was something else. Her blood turned to ice. Her hand, which had been scrubbing at a chipped plate in the sink, stilled.
“You wouldn’t,” she whispered, but her voice betrayed her terror.
Tobias sneered, his teeth yellow in the dim light. “Wouldn’t I? He’s nothing but a burden. Useless boy, always skulking about with his nose in a book. Might as well be worth something before he drags us both into the gutter.”
