Shiba's phone rings in the middle of the night, which sucks. He likes going to bed late and waking up early, so he really values his few hours of sleep-time.
He groans, awoken by the annoying beeping and buzzing from the damn thing. Who the hell would call this late in the- What hour even is it!? He puts the thing to his ear, mentally cursing whoever is on the other side.
"My apartment blew up."
"The hell?" He sits up on his bed immediately, recognizing Azami's tired voice on the other side of the line. Not even a "Hello" or an attempt at any kind of formality, which to Shiba is a hint that Azami might be on the verge of having a mental breakdown. "'Zami, that you? What are you-"
"My apartment blew up." He says again. The exact same intonation, save that this one feels a bit more rushed. "Can I spend the night at yours?"

Everything's a blur, just lumps of colors behind his eyelids, distant voices, and a dull ache in his stomach. Damon's tongue darted out over his bottom lip, but his mouth had gone completely sour, deprived of any moisture.
He… what was he doing?
'I died.'
It's a bitter, dreadful whisper in the back of his mind, one that's all too familiar.
'I died again.'

There’s a breeze that blows some of the palm fronds against one another, and Hajime notices that the trees make a distinct sound that he’s never quite heard before. At the academy, when the trees swayed, it sounded like the low-pitched flapping of bird wings. The palms, waxy leaves brushing one another, are more like waves against the sand.
Hajime closes his eyes and looks up, taking in the sound. There had been a lot encoded into the audio files of the program—the strum of a ukelele, the crashing of the water on the rocks—but now is the first moment Hajime has ever heard something so mundane as the palm trees swaying in the wind.

He never let himself hope for an escape, until he met stupidly stubborn Gon, who made things seem like huh, maybe there was a way to find joy in their sorrows.
Building a home together was easy. Creating a life with Gon was natural. Falling in love was inevitable. Excitement replaced dread, and finally Killua relaxed.
What came after was a reminder that nothing ever lasts long.
