Summary
A lurch in his stomach, like the moment of dark surprise when he misses a step going down the stairs. It soon turns into a gnawing sensation, a memory of hunger that seems to be there always, although Hans has since always had enough to eat. Hunger for touch. For Henry. For their desperate fumbling in his borrowed bed in the fortress. For more time together, despite the busy days that followed them in the Kuttenberg region after the siege, and then returning home to plan this, their great escape, their last chance.
Rattay, Vienna, Sofia, Constantinople, Alexandria, Jerusalem. Hans and Henry on pilgrimage to the Holy Land on borrowed time, through six cities, in six states of sin and sanctity.

Summary
Dozens of people have touched him this way, from nursemaids to bathhouse girls. Hell, he was manhandled bare-arsed into a tub only moments ago without so much as blinking. There’s no reason for Henry’s touch to feel like this. To make Hans feel like this. But it’s nice, God, it’s nice, Henry’s big blacksmith’s mitts impossibly gentle as he loosens the blood from Hans’s hair.
For the first time since taking that decoction, his heart kicks in his chest, hard enough that his pulse jumps noticeably under his neck.

Summary
“Have you ever thought,” Henry began, once they had settled back into place, all of Hans’ pointy bits corralled by Henry’s arms, “about doin’ it like y’do with women?”
Hans had imagined some question about a new grip for a sword, or a new deer track Henry wanted to investigate, or a new antic he wanted to unleash on the Hangman’s Halter. Not that.
Though none of those would have made him flush as he did before asking.
“Taking it up the arse, you mean?”
Henry and Hans, new to relationships with men and with very little prior experience between them, decide to try something often joked about, but never fully described. Things don’t go as smoothly as planned.

Henry can not swim, but living without his love would be quite dim. So he dives in; risking life and limb.

Hans puts his arms around Henry and they sway, not quite dancing, grasping onto the tattered fragments of song and holding them tight. And it should be joyful but Henry feels the ache in his chest growing and glowing and expanding, cleaving him into mirrored fragments, because the music is so thin and distant and the forest reflections are so wild and strange and they will never do this properly, they will never dance before a minstrel, they will never be more than these phantoms in the dark.
