Summary
When Frank plants himself on Robby’s doorstep he is fully intending to lie. He intends to plead his innocence, to beg for another chance, to get on his goddamn hands and knees and pray to Robby like he is some kind of eternal higher being who holds Frank's life in his hands.
Wants to, needs to, can't slip from the tightrope he’s been walking his entire life. Has to keep it together, keep it to himself, has Robby’s ’fuck you’ ringing in his ears and leaves him desperately trying to put his life back together.
He shouldn’t be here. Robby will never forgive him for this.

Summary
Call it morbid, but Langdon could name times when he had very clearly thought, thank fuck this isn’t my life. He could compartmentalize a patient's passing this way by taking some comfort in the fact that he didn’t need to wake up tomorrow, the next day, and the day after that, and deal with the stuff that these families and friends were made to go through, against their will.
In these situations, he only had to gather himself for a minute or so when notifying the next of kin. He himself could go and sit inside his car with timed pre-warmed seats, drive for 15 minutes, and arrive at the driveway of a house with a well constructed and well looking home-life waiting inside.or Frank Langdon dealing with the aftermath of everything.

It didn't take Robby (or really, any of the doctors in the ED) long to figure out Langdon's diagnosis, even though he'd never said anything about it. It was pretty obvious, to be honest, and he didn't really care if they knew. Their reactions, however, he was more worried about.

When he admitted to stealing meds from the hospital, to his drug use in general, Frank Langdon destroyed quite a few relationships. Getting back from rehab didn't fix those relationships, but maybe they helped him make a few more.
OR: Langdon and Santos talk things out. They might not ever be friends, but if you hold up a mirror to one, you'll probably end up seeing the other.

Summary
In group one day, Social Worker Jake says, “Look, when you get out of here, you may need to make some new friends. You may need to leave behind some of the old ones, the ones who got you into bad habits. One of the hardest things for folks in recovery is figuring out how to fill the time that you used to spend getting high.”
Frank almost bites through his cheek. He doesn’t have a surplus of people, or seemingly really know how to find new ones, and, anyways, his job is the only fucking thing he likes and everyone he might want to avoid is going to be there too. So it’s not a social problem, except for all the ways that it is.
(Frank and Mel are friends. At least, he thinks so. They're friends, right?)

Summary
After a disastrous final shift on July 4, Robby leaves for his sabbatical.
Eight days later, somewhere in the Badlands, he awakens to a dozen missed calls and messages from back home. Something terrible has happened. Frank Langdon has been shot, and he might not make it.
Consumed by worry and by guilt, Robby returns to Pittsburgh, the memory of his last, terrible conversation with Frank playing on a loop in his head.
He hopes it is not too late to make amends of his own.
“Is he dead?” Robby manages to rasp out. His body is curling in on itself. He can feel himself unravelling. It’s too familiar. It’s all too familiar. This can’t be happening. “Is Frank fucking dead, Dana?”

Summary
It was nice that he was glad to be back. She was so glad that he was. Because she liked him, despite the rumors. She liked his - their - stupid jokes. And she knew, already, that she would take just about any orders he gave her, whether they were signed as Dr. Langdon or otherwise. She trusted him. She had only known him for fifteen hours, if you ignored the 10-month gap, and she still trusted him. She didn’t trust a lot of people.
So she took ten minutes. And when she went out onto the floor eleven minutes later, feeling pressure at the back of her head, part of her wished it was still his hand.

Summary
Melissa woke up to her phone ringing, she turned over to look at her alarm clock.
3:15 am.
Who was calling this late at night, or early in the morning? She grabbed her phone and squinted her eyes. The screen read “Frank”. Her co-worker at the ER. She answered and in a tired voice she mumbled.
“Hello?”
“Mel?” Frank’s voice was heavy, like he was worried about something. “Were you sleeping? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you–”
“Frank, are you okay? Something sounds wrong.”
“Uhm, can you come over? I don’t think I can be alone right now. I don’t know how to explain it, but-”
“I’ll be over.”
Frank Langdon is struggling and calls the only person he can think of, Mel, to help.

Summary
Dr. Melissa King had never been a fan of the unknown. The anxiety of a scenario she couldn’t truly prepare for. The loss of control that came with being unable to anticipate what would come next. But as she pulled her ancient grey Jeep into a front spot at Beacon Recovery, she was doing her best to put all that aside. She cranked up the radio that was tethered to her phone and closed her eyes as the chorus of the upbeat song that played washed over her, part of a playlist she had created just for the occasion.

They're big on acceptance, in NA. Frank mostly thinks it's bullshit, but it's not like what he was doing before was working any better, so he's giving it his best shot. He's accepted that he can't trust himself, and he's accepted that he's never going to get back what he had before, and he can accept that there's nothing for him and Robby to say to each other, now, too. He can do that.
