After Maruki's palace was dealt with, Akira found himself alone. Not that his friends weren't there, but the pain was so grand it felt like part of him died with Akechi when that palace crumbled to the ground. Now, back to his hometown and picking up on his previous life, he needs to deal with all the pain and longing of realizing his own feelings towards the Detective Prince. One day, he decides that texting his number like he was still alive brought him some comfort, and it turns into a habit. Akechi became a silent Confidant to his day, grocery lists and loneliness. It was great, he was finally feeling better, even if the messages were never delivered.
Until, one day, he received a reply.

Then a coat fits wrong. A glove sits loose. A silence asks nothing and somehow gets everything. The inventory accumulates in small, specific pieces until Akechi runs out of architecture to hide behind.
He tells himself one more week.

“Guinea pig.” Goro fixed him with a look, his expression completely unreadable, his voice quiet and emotionless. “Why does she call you that?
Something uneasy settled into Akira’s stomach as he looked into those maroon-brown eyes. “I, well, back during the Phantom Thieves, she and I had, yknow, a deal.”
“A deal,” Goro repeated impassively, turning away to look at the tile on the far side of the subway. If anything, he seemed even more stiff, face darkening. “One of your deals.”

Two years after the fall of the Metaverse, Akira and Goro get all dressed up to go see Goro's favorite musical, but a chance encounter with a certain doctor causes old wounds to resurface.

“Time is 22:40. Begin audio notes for case SK-2217—Japanese male, between the ages of 18 and 22, found via anonymous tip. Time of death approximately 24 hours before exam. Mangled ID badge in pants pocket provided the name Akechi Goro, but no matching records have been found yet. Investigation currently underway.”
Akira clicks the button again to pause the recording and sets the manila folder containing the paltry amount of information they have on their newest guest aside. Talking to himself like this still feels a bit strange, especially tonight, when the oppressive silence and emptiness of the coroner's office makes every sound echo like thunder, but Sojiro will be checking his work when he arrives tomorrow morning, and he's determined not to mess up his first solo post-mortem.

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross is full of shit, Akira thinks.
How can you define grief as five measly stages? How can you define grief at all? Akira shoves his hands into his messy curls and lets out a groan while sitting at Leblanc’s counter.
Grief is not all that simple to Akira. It comes in spurts, in squiggles, in lines, in blobs. It’s not nearly close to linear, and it’s not even close to five stages. Maybe ten. Maybe twenty. Hell, to him, it seems like the stages are endless. He’s stuck in a loop of grievance that shows no pity towards him.
Or, Akira never thought he'd have to incorporate Maruki's lesson on the five stages of grief into his own life.

However, when a chance to escape presents itself, he manages to take it and not look back.
Fresh out of a Metaverse enforcer, Masayoshi Shido needs a new one. His search brings him to a small town called Inaba, site of the infamous ‘Inaba TV murders.’ Unfortunately, one Akira Kurusu, fated Trickster, crosses Shido’s path earlier than he should. As a result, he is thrust into the world of Persona with no guidance or hope.
How will Shido's two pawns react to each other when thrown into conflict? How will a version of Goro Akechi, driven by his desire to prevent others from being exploited in the same way he was, as well as the trappings of a revenge plot against Masayoshi Shido, choose to show society the justice of the Phantom Thieves?
The pieces are in position and the board is set. Now a question must needs be asked: shall we play a game?

Turning around, the man himself appears. He’s little changed from when Goro last saw him: not in his Metaverse outfit, but in the clothes from that winter, a thick grey outer coat with a black sweater sticking out from underneath, blue scarf wrapped tightly his neck, glasses appropriately fogged from the Palace’s weather and his mop of black hair as unkempt as ever.
If it weren’t for the golden eyes, Goro would almost mistake him for the real person.
Thrown into solitary confinement the day after he shot Adam Kadmon, Akira forms a Palace. Fortunately for him, Goro Akechi intervenes.

It’s during this walk that he sees it: a cheesy magazine targeted towards young women at the entrance of a tiny bookshop. On the cover the title '10 signs you’re with the right person' shines in glittery pink.
Goro is with no 'person'. He is with rival, though. Perhaps this magazine will shed some insight into why Ren has decided to leave him for five days. Does he not care about their rivalry? Goro can’t properly map out his plans to top Ren 一as in, win一 if he leaves for five days. That’s five days in which he can’t analyse every single reply Ren gives to Goro’s questions, or every mannerism he has, or every lock of hair on his head. So how is Goro meant to be a good rival? How is he meant to top Ren if Ren isn’t there to be topped?
He buys the magazine.
