Summary
Once upon a time, like a punchline to a joke, a half-demon and a hunter knelt before a grave and talked.
The half-demon reiterated what she knows (what she has just learned) to the hunter. She states that hunters kill all demons. When the hunter confirms it, she verifies “Anything with patterns?”
She is looking at her own.
And this is the key moment, the fulcrum on which a wish swings: Celine does not say, “No”. She does not say that the hunters will spare the half-demon, even if she has patterns, because she is Rumi and she is a person. Celine says, “Cover those up,” and says “You are not like them Rumi.” She says, “Your patterns will go away when you turn the Honmoon gold.” She tells Rumi that she only has patterns because her dad was a demon. Neither of them says that Rumi is not a demon.
Celine says, ‘You can be fixed’ and Rumi hears ‘You can be spared, if you are fixed.’
What Celine tells her is she is different from them, but not different enough.

So that’s it, huh.
Mira does a better job at stifling her tears than Zoey, but she still feels a few warm drops run down her cheeks.
The hopes and dreams of being an idol at Sunlight Entertainment—hell, of being anything—are gone with a handwave from some guy in a suit and a paper that says “Thanks for auditioning”.
Before she can storm out as quickly as possible to save what little face she has left, Mira turns on her heel and freezes at the sight of Celine, the CEO of Sunlight Entertainment, watching her. That odd woman with the purple braid and mask floats behind her, eyes gleaming.
“Mira. Zoey.” Celine steps towards them. “Before you leave, I have an offer I’d like you to consider.”
Or: When Mira and Zoey, both running from difficult pasts, audition to become idols at Sunlight Entertainment (famous for its mysterious headliner idol Hunter) and fail, all hopes of meeting and training under Hunter go out the window until Celine makes them a different, surprise offer: train under Celine’s unknown ward Rumi instead.
(“Why us?” Zoey asks.
“Honestly,” Rumi says, “I think you're both really weird.”
Oh. Mira might kill her.)

“Why are you even here, Mira?” Rumi sounds so tired that it almost startles Mira. She shifts on her feet, uncertainty outing itself in the twitch of her brow, and Rumi steps into her space like a challenge.
“Because Zoey still loves you.”
Rumi’s eyes narrow into something accusatory. “I asked why you’re here.”
“Because I wanna know why you didn’t get on that fucking plane.”
Mira and Zoey left, and Rumi didn't follow. Instead, she self-destructed for a global audience. Three years later, Mira and Zoey come back for her.

“Mira, why isn’t she disappearing?”
Warm blood leaked from where Mira’s gok-do had been thrust through her chest. It was the only warmth Rumi still felt. Her fingers had gone numb, and her skin had lost its pallor as it turned a chalky white, all color fading from it except for the patterns that lined every surface of her body. Those only grew more stark with the contrast. Rumi forced herself to look away from them. She didn’t want her last moments to be spent staring at her own imperfections.
Things play out differently backstage at the Idol Awards, and Huntr/x's comeback is put on indefinite leave.

Rumi thinks that this last month has to be the best month of her life.
Well, afterlife.
Basically the same thing.
People are moving in. She’s seen them, both of them. Rumi practically lost her mind when she realised what was happening, because she’s been alone for an awful amount of time—ten whole years—and she was going to completely go insane if she didn’t have anyone to at least pretend to talk to.
She, admittedly, hasn’t been a ghost for very long. It’s only been ten years, which she knows is basically nothing when she’s effectively immortal now. Rumi hasn’t entirely figured that part out, and she’s also forgotten why she died or how it happened in the first place, so all of her hopes of actually moving on have been more or less dashed for the time being. Which is fine, she’s sure she would have figured it out at some point once she actually started to lose it—which likely would have happened in the next year, because ten years was already way too long to spend alone—but now there are people, and they’re moving in, and she’s not going to be alone anymore.
Like she said. Best month of her life.

The weird, famous lady spirited her away (Mira took a cab, but whatever) to her not-at-all sketchy retreat in the mountains and told her she would become a famous Kpop idol and also a supernatural demon hunter who would defend the world from evil. Or else.
This, understandably, changed her life and her understanding of herself completely.
The other thing that did that was Rumi.
