Sam breathes deeply before descending into the basement of the King Solomon. It’s become ritualistic to have to compose himself before seeing John. He can’t even remember when it started - if it was when he noticed the freckle that sat just below the collar of his pourpoint or the way he taps his fingers on the desk when he’s frustrated, maybe when he tilts his face to the sun with shut eyes as if to soak it all in while he could - but it was happening to him with no way to stop it.

His lips hovered by Hans’s ear, wrestling with the impossible desire to speak the one truth that trembled in him—to know if he was right. To know this was real. He clenched a fistful of shirt as if reaching for the very heart of him, and pressed his body flush to Hans’s hips. He whispered:
“I think of you… in ways I shouldn’t.”
Hans shuddered in his arms—growing harder still. His mouth fell open, and he didn’t even try to object. Oh God. It was true. He loved hearing that. His words.

Summary
Henry doesn’t allow himself a final look.
He wouldn’t call himself a superstitious man, by any means, but the thought of turning to watch Suchdol recede over his shoulder feels like it would be courting disaster. It’s foolish, really. Henry knows the fortress has endured trebuchet fire and hand cannons, its walls aren’t going to crack from a distant glance, but he can’t bring himself to turn his head.
It’s too close to a goodbye, and he’s sworn those off for the time being.

Hans’s voice rang out louder than he had meant to, disbelief and outrage seeping through. The man before him regarded him with tired eyes. Clearly, he had known this was coming and did not have the energy or patience to deal with it. Zizka leaned back in his chair before answering.
“We’re all nobles here, Sir Hans. It doesn’t change the reality that we are besieged and there are more of us trapped in here than there are beds available. Even Pisek is sharing a bed and you’ll be no exception.”

"Are you cold?" Henry asked.
Without armor, in hose and gambeson, he was still an imposing figure: tall and broad, hands stained with dirt and blood, jaw stubbornly stiff. His bare feet were a shock of white in the dirt. He held his helm with both hands, embracing the metal into his belly. His hair was damp with sweat. There was another string of bruises on his throat, shaped like two wide thumbs.
Hans looked away. The tunic around Henry's knee had darkened. Blood was trickling into the dirt.
Hans kills a man, prepares for a wedding, and tries to do at least one thing right.

And yet, the mask he wore couldn't withstand the pressure. Those very training sessions began to crack something inside him, something he couldn’t control. Not until he and Henry are ambushed by a group of Cumans and become separated from the rest of their group.
This story is a long journey into Hans’s psyche, a shifting blend of flashbacks and present events that delve deep into his character.

“Well, well, well,” came the man’s grating tone, not unlike the scrape of a thousand little jagged rocks to inebriated ears. “What’ve we got here?”
“What do you want?” Hans’ voice didn’t suggest that he was terribly impressed with the unwarranted intrusion either. Henry nodded his curt agreement, hoping that the overt —if not disconcertingly mobile—staleness of his facial features would convey his distaste. He'd have crossed his arms to emphasize this if the floor wasn't waving about below his boots.
“See, I just find myself wondering,” Hynek replied, having come to rest a palm upon an adjacent table. His eyes were aglow within their sockets with the glint of mischief, and already, Henry did not want to hear whatever the robber baron was about to divulge.
