As a druid, Mordred had been raised on the stories of the old gods, of their lord Emrys and how his coming would mean freedom for their people. What he had trouble with was seeing Merlin -clumsy, gangly, grinning Merlin- as anything more than a faltering servant. That is, until Emrys shows him otherwise.

Something slides up his throat, and before he can stop himself, he’s choking into his hands. When he pulls them away, he’s shocked to find them covered in a red, brownish, dark color. Like coffee grounds.
“Elle--” he wheezes, his eyes unable to look away from his hands. “Coffee grounds--”
“Shit,” she replies, holding him steady as he begins to cough again. “You’re okay, you’re okay, Reid. Hotch!”
The room spins. The last thing he sees before it all goes dark is her eyes seeing right through him, dark brown and full of fear and admiration.

Arthur's eyes widen minutely, and Merlin can see fists tighten by his side, but he doesn't move out of Merlin's grasp, doesn't show any other reaction. And Merlin has never touched Arthur like this, never so unkindly but he's reached a boiling point, the thought of carrying on with this thankless routine is agonising.
His voice is almost a whisper when he speaks next. He leans in closer, unable to look at Arthur anymore, instead he says his next words a breath away from his ear. "You could thank me on your knees and it wouldn't come anywhere close to adequate appreciation."

In which Merlin is overwhelmed and underappreciated. Stretched thin between keeping the kingdom safe, playing the role of Arthur’s servant as well as the role of Gaius’ apprentice, and dealing with his magic, he snaps and quits. Arthur, of course, begins to realise the emptiness of life without Merlin. What follows is a mix of frustration, hurt, pining, and, finally, a reunion. Featuring the ever tired and concerned knights of the round table (except Gwaine, he doesn’t really give a shit.)
