In later years: in interviews, on first dates, with the people at work, that was his story: he liked the name because it reminded him of a fond childhood memory, that in difficult moments, there could be humor and joy. And sure, that was true. But there was another element to that, the part that he knew that the majority of people would never really understand. Klavier liked the ambiguity. What was the gender of an inanimate object like a piano? He wasn’t a girl, or a boy, or neither, or both. He was just Klavier.

“A demonstration?” Jon asks, and the words come out very level, very careful. He’s still frozen in the same position, like he’s afraid he might spook off a bird that’s miraculously landed on him by moving.
Tim opens his mouth to reply, but only manages it on the second try.
“Yeah,” he says. “Hands on, you know. Let you get to see the thing for yourself.”
“And you would be tying up…” Jon says, trailing off into a silence that begs to be filled, answered.
“You,” Tim confirms, and he thinks he sees Jon shiver as he says it. “I couldn’t-- can’t tie myself up, after all.”
“But I can’t-- I don’t do that,” Jon says, as if remembering himself. He almost sounds disappointed. “I don’t-- I don’t enjoy sex. I’m very certain of that much, I made sure. I can’t--”
“Who said anything about sex?”

Ema clenches her fists, nails digging into her skin until it nearly breaks, then speaks again, voice shaking. "They could have-they could have reviewed State v Skye. They might have decided to release Damon Gant from prison and send my sister to the electric chair! They could have killed Lana, and left me more alone than I already fucking am!"
Or, a coincidental encounter at a thrift store between Ema and Klavier leads to several revelations, a few tears, and a very important conversation.

She’s known him only a week, but it’s already clear to her that Klavier Gavin has high expectations of the world around him. And Ema hates people who have high expectations. It’s unrealistic. It’s blind naïvety. You have high expectations, and you set yourself up to fail. It’s something she’s seen time and time again.
And it’s a lesson Gavin needs to learn, starting off small—because it’s 8AM at a murder scene in a 7/11 and he’s already dipped his hand into her bag of Snackoos that she’d taken the convenient opportunity to buy while they were stuck here, without asking, twice now.
