“A god? No, dear.” And then the shadows condensed around something, stretching in black strands of darkness, revealing a face. It was a smiling one, eyes as red as pure crimson, and a sharp jaw that showed the banality of his face. Its thick, trimmed eyebrows gave it the most beautiful face Xie Lian had ever seen, but his beauty was something demonic. When it spoke again, its voice now had a fleshy red mouth to say: “I am no god, prince. I am the one they despise the most, and I came from where you have always feared to arrive.”
________Xie Lian is a prince desperate for help. He goes
into the woods, at night, searching for old gods that may help him. Instead, he finds a demon. A demon of the night called Hua Cheng, who says that he can make the prince's most desire comes true.But there's a price. A deal is made. Deciding to take a risk, Xie Lian let the fabric fall from his hands onto the floor and very slowly reclined himself back so that he was propped on his elbows, bare abdomen on full display. Hua Cheng’s eye followed the movement, his eyebrow twitching slightly. Xie Lian closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, holding it for several seconds before releasing it, opening his eyes halfway to return the other’s gaze.
“Gege,” Hua Cheng said, something unraveling in his tone. The shirt he’d been fiddling with fell from his grasp. “What are you doing?”
“...Making myself comfortable,” Xie Lian responded slowly.
“No, gege. You’re doing something else.”
Hua Cheng was hosting a college party at his house and it was going great...that is, until Xie Lian's bad luck found him shirtless in Hua Cheng's room, alcohol-stained shirt in hand. A result of somebody's drink spilling on him. The more Xie Lian thought about it, the situation didn't seem so bad. He had been crushing on Hua Cheng since they'd met, after all.

A soft giggle floated on the crisp breeze and Xie Lian glanced up from sorting, expecting to see some local children playing in the forest, but it was otherwise quiet. No rushed footfalls or rambunctious shouts, but perhaps they played the hiding game. His attention returned to his task, turning over various recipes in his head and deciding upon improvements with the addition of his overripe berries.
Another quiet laugh, then a soft rustle, and Xie Lian’s hands stilled. Rather than raise his head he listened closely instead, centuries of experience told him this laughter was not as childish as initially thought.
“Handsome gege…” a voice tittered and the woodsy scent of bamboo was suddenly overwhelmed by a thick, cloying fragrance. Xie Lian wrinkled his nose before he was seized with the urge to sneeze.
God he may be, but when one lived nearly a millennium it wasn’t possible to cling to every incident with perfect clarity. Much of his past was best forgotten, but that scent quickly, viciously dragged one particularly horrid memory to the surface.
