Jonnie knows he's easy pickings. He's the smallest guy in the whole 7th grade and nobody's dumb enough on the planet to stick up for him. In and out of school he plays the role of a punching bag, but that's just what life is for him so he sucks it up and keeps on going.
Jimmy wants to be just like his dad and look out for the little guy. He may not be the smartest guy around but his dad says he's got a lot of heart and he thinks he could probably work with that.
Or, Jimmy and Jonnie meet in seventh grade. Through a cascade of events that neither of them could've ever predicted, this leads them to join the mafia five and a half years later.

Cheeky hadn’t spent much time around those hulking automatons in the past and as a member of the Mobgoblins, much preferred it that way. A criminal and member of law enforcement were hardly going to be the best of friends and even though the thing was clearly broken as hell, Cheeky was still distinctly aware of what they could do – what he had seen them do to those less sneaky and agile than him.
“I-“ Cheeky swallowed thickly, found himself for once at a loss for words. “I don’t understand lads. I thought the bosses said they’d get me some muscle. I didn’t- I don’t know what I’m even looking at ‘ere.-“
“Well they ain’t gonna send one of us with you, are they?” The Mobgoblin grinned and it seemed like this was a cruel joke all along. “No, our lives are much too valuable to risk pulling you out the way of a bolt, old man.” He pointed into the darkness of that last cell. “That’s what you get.”
