is it strange to call this fic comforting? perhaps. but there's something incredibly compelling to someone forcing themself to live through the tragedy of life despite it all, i guess. the tonal shift from complete despair into almost a forced resignation is incredibly interesting to read, and i've been enjoying watching it almost accelerate to the end.

i love a lot of daylightbreaks's work and find myself rereading their fics a lot but this one in particular is really good at balancing the original work's tone with the changes they've made to the plot; i think fic writers tend to get sucked into their particular world/retelling (i'm not immune to this) but there's a certain skill in still making a fic recognizably associated w the property it's based on and not turning it into something that's two shades off of being original work. this fic feels so much like if horikoshi decided bnha was going to be a mafia/yakuza story and i think that's why i keep revisiting it :)

i love when silly fic concepts become big all-encompassing worlds... also some of the most poignant + precise writing of the war from more perspectives than the people fighting on the ground, which i greatly appreciate. no character feels underutilized throughout, even the ones who die early, which i think is one of the hardest parts of writing ensemble stories.

Summary
Soma and the rest of the 92nd generation graduated from Totsuki with the highest succession rate ever. Some of them decided to take internships with other, more learned chefs to expand their repertoire and learn more before diving fully into the culinary world, while others took over the family business. Others chose to open their own restaurants right from the get-go, and one outlier decided to do something completely different, unusual and unnecessary. But for now, all businesses, internships, new dining establishments, and others are put aside as some of Totsuki's most successful graduates return to Totsuki barely two years after graduating. Their purpose? To serve as the teachers for the 97th Generation's Friendship and Rapport Training Camp. Students will be observed and scrutinised, the weak will be weeded out from the abundance of students, and out of the 1000, maybe about two-thirds will leave this camp as Totsuki students. Will some students catch the eyes of our shining generation?
