Erdan picked up his own quill and prepared to write. He looked across the room at Jolene. He thought that Jolene looked like an honest, kind, good person. He also thought that she looked like the kind of person who was used to both being underestimated and easily disproving that assumption.
Jolene, apparently noticing Erdan’s staring, turned her head slightly to meet his eyes. Erdan, embarrassed at having been caught, averted his glance. But he still felt her eyes on him. After a moment, he looked back at her and found her green eyes regarding him intensely. Then, she smiled. It was a small smile, but Erdan could see the gap in her teeth. Without even thinking about it, he smiled back. Her grin grew the smallest bit wider before she turned her attention back to the front of the room.
Erdan felt a warmth blooming in his chest that he couldn’t quite name.
(Lucanus and Erdan meet Jolene Cybin. Their lives aren't ever the same again - and it's for the better.)
