Summary
The kid claps a hand over his mouth. His eyes are huge and sparkling with something that looks like excitement or mischief, probably both.
"Sorry, sorry," he whispers loudly. Then he leans forward, like he's about to share a secret. "You're a hunk, right?"
Buck chokes on nothing. "I. What?"
"A hunk," the kid repeats. "You know, a hunk."
"I..." Buck has no idea what's happening. "Sure? I guess? I mean, I've been told... I work out sometimes—"
"Perfect!" The kid is already digging around in his backpack. He pulls out a slightly crumpled rectangle of cardstock and presents it to Buck with great ceremony. "This is for you."
It's a handmade card written in crayon, blue crayon. The handwriting is careful but wobbly, the letters all different sizes.

Summary
"Please tell me you aren't seriously apologizing to me for crying right now."
Buck swallows and ducks his head, suddenly sheepish. Half a moment later, a warm, solid weight materializes on his shoulder. Eddie's palm radiates heat through the thick fabric of Buck's sweater. It's instantly grounding.
"You're allowed to cry, Buck," Eddie says quietly. "We've been through a lot today."
"It's not fair when we're arguing," Buck mumbles, refusing to look up.
Eddie sighs, his grip on Buck's shoulder tightens, his thumb pressing in against Buck's collarbone. "We're best friends. You never have to pretend with me."

Summary
Eddie’s already there, turning to wave, except when he sees Buck, his hand freezes mid-air, mouth falling open so wide it nearly hits the floor.
Buck suddenly remembers he's wearing nothing but a towel.
"Fuck," he says.
Eddie's gaze drops, just for a second, a quick flick down and back up, but Buck catches it, and his face goes hot.
He should get clothes. He should absolutely get clothes. He should turn around and walk to his bedroom and put on pants instead of not moving, naked and dripping in his living room.
Eddie's face is turning red. He's still frozen with his hand half-raised, mouth slightly open, and Buck is having a hard time remembering why clothes are important when Eddie is looking at him like that.
The towel betrays him, slipping with inconsiderate, dramatic timing. Buck lunges for it, misses, and is suddenly very, very naked.

Summary
“You don’t want to be my girlfriend.”
“I already said that.”
“But you want to be my—my something else?”
Eddie’s breath catches. Her eyes fly open, stinging and damp.
She doesn’t answer. Her throat constricts, trapping breath inside, trapping a response inside. Silently, she prays to a god she’s not sure she believes in that the floor will open up and swallow her whole. She can’t hear him say what she thinks he’s about to say; she can’t hear it, not even once. She can’t come back from that. She just—she can’t.
Buck pushes on, hesitant. “...My boyfriend?”

Summary
She shakes her head. “I don’t want to play princesses anymore,” she says.
Eddie feels his stomach churn. Why does that bother him? He should be happy. He’s terrible at this game. He’s always been bad at playing pretend. It’s never been fun for him.
So why, he wonders, does the idea of going back to Normal Eddie feel like such a task?
He swallows. “What if I want to keep being Princess Eddie?” he whispers.
Eddie plays princesses with Jee. It breaks him.

"It's fine, Jee," Eddie says. "Buck doesn't have to kiss me."
"Yes he does." Jee crosses her arms and looks sternly at Buck. "Daddy and Mommy kiss every time when they go away from each other."
"Yeah, okay." Buck sucks in a breath and steps towards Eddie. He ducks his head down and presses the most fleeting kiss to Eddie's cheek.
"Not like that," Jee scolds.
"What? Why not?" Buck squawks.
"Because," she sighs and gives him a long, disapproving look. "Mommy and Daddy always kiss on the lips."

Summary
Buck tries to commit the frame to memory, wills himself not to forget the important details—Eddie on his knees in front of him, his nails seeking purchase along Buck's thighs as he drinks him down, his drawn-out gasps when Buck returns the favor.
After, when Buck reaches out for quiet confirmation in the dark, asks him, "Good?"
Eddie tells him, earnest and hard-won, "Everything is good with you," and Buck can bask in the illusion of a world where he almost believes it.
Buck is trying to leave the past where it belongs. Then he wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy, convinces Eddie to join him, and falls headfirst into (not so) casual sex with his best friend.

Summary
“I don’t know what to do,” Buck admits, defeated.
Eddie blinks. “You…don’t know how to floss?”
Buck glares at him. “Obviously I know how to floss,” he sasses, which is a good point. Eddie has seen him do it hundreds of times. Buck is very diligent with his oral hygiene. “I just don’t know whether I should. It’s not sexy. I wouldn’t usually, if I - - y’know, historically, at this point,” he says, gesturing between them. “I wouldn’t.”
Or, Eddie is a low maintenance sleeper. Buck tries to explode his snoring strips with his mind.

Summary
“Bye, Eddie,” Buck says quickly, fluttering his lashes innocently at him, he smiles widely at glare he’s getting, and adds, “I love you.”
Eddie rolls his eyes, “Asshole,” he replies, his face blushed bright red.
(Or, Buck finds out that Eddie gets all flustered when someone tells him they love him. Naturally, Buck needs to tell him all the time now. It’s purely platonic, leave him alone.)

Summary
“He’s not my boyfriend! He’s Eddie! He’s a renter, and he’s straight,” Buck said proudly, as if that clarified anything.
The reporter hesitated. “So he was there because...?”
“He’s a paramedic,” Buck said, nodding solemnly. “Well, he used to be my firefighter partner, and now he’s someone else’s paramedic partner, which is fine, I guess. I miss him, though. He’s… he’s kind of my favorite person.”
The reporter blinked, caught somewhere between touched and deeply uncomfortable. “Well, it’s a good thing he was there!”
Buck brightened, grinning wide and loopy. “Yeah, isn’t he the best? Man, I love him. And not just in a straight renter way. In a bisexual homeowner way. I just bought a house, you know!”
