An older, tall Asian woman stepped out. “What’s got your knickers in a twist?” She laughed. “Jamie fucking Tartt, he bitches about you all the fucking time.”
Jamie gaped at her. “That was fucking Roy Kent, wasn’t it?”
Mei nodded. “What can I get you?”
“You can get me that dusty old fart.”
Mei laughed. “Roy, your customer.”

Even at his prickiest he still knew how to make little ones feel like they were special. It was one of those things that had made Roy furious.
Back then he hated anything that made Jamie seem like maybe he wasn’t such a dickhead. And seeing him with little lads and lasses definitely gave Roy feelings he wasn’t prepared to have.
Roy has to admit that wasn’t the only time he’d seen how comfortable Jamie was with kiddos. And he also has to admit that it always leaves him feeling some kind of way.

At that, Roy snaps back up to attention, his heart thundering up against his chest. “Jamie’s a man, Mum.”
“Oh! Well, alright,” Mum says slowly, her voice carefully thoughtful. And Roy knows, he knows deep down to his bones, that he’s an idiot to hope that will be the end of it. There’s a long enough pause that the feeling begins to swell in his chest, when, “Well, I think that’s wonderful, Roy. I can’t wait to meet your boyfriend at the wedding.”
