Neil's excuse for all this mess was that he's not good at directions. He got lost easily and, one day after class, found himself at the door of a small, cozy café. Having a hot drink and just relaxing there sounded amazing, but things never go the way Neil plans them, of course.
So, when he saw that the only available sit at the place was next to Andrew, who was known for hating Neil—and almost everyone, to be fair—he thought "fuck it, I'm going to bother the shit out of him", and so he did. For several days. Non-stop.

Summary
He would stick a knife in the throat of anyone who tried to make him admit it, but Andrew was actually a little concerned about Neil running this race. From what he can tell, this can go one of two ways. Option one: Neil would be reasonable and just survive the race. Run at a sensible pace, make it across the finish line alive, and keep his mouth shut the next time some asshole reporter starts harassing him. Option two: Neil, because he is Neil, would try way too hard to keep up with the people who actually put in a lot of time training for these things. He would pull a muscle or pass out on the course, and Andrew would have to drag his ass to the nearest hospital, which would really throw a wrench in Andrew’s weekend plans of doing absolutely nothing. Not even to mention the absolute hissy fit Kevin would throw if Neil were injured. If Andrew were a betting man, his money would go to option two.

The cake itself really wasn’t perfect, but the fact that Neil had done this for him, that he had gone out of his way for Andrew, that he had used the time Andrew was gone to try to bake something just for him, was. It settled somewhere in Andrew’s chest, warm and slow and unfamiliar. No one had ever done this for Andrew before. It was the first time anyone had looked at Andrew and thought he deserved something as ordinary and impossible as a birthday cake.

Their towels are already spread on the sand, bags and shoes placed at the corners to keep them from blowing away. Neil is sitting with his knee pulled close to his chest, staring out at the water, seemingly fine, but Andrew knows better. He always does. Neil wouldn’t have even noticed anything was wrong, if Andrew didn't suddenly press his palm against the back of his neck.
“Your mother is dead,” Andrew says, detached and even. “But you are alive.”
Neil and Andrew take a needed trip away to the coastline. The soft sand and salty air stir up more memories than either of them hoped it would.
