Shane’s mouth fell open, half grinning with amusement. Did Ilya really think Hayden was in love with him?

“How could he not?!” Ilya cut him off. “You are perfect. Perfect son, perfect hockey player, perfect boyfriend, perfect friend!” He spits out, using air quotations to exaggerate the friend part.

Which Shane supposes he kinda was, in a previous life.
There's fake blood trickling from his nose. Artfully smudged across his upper lip. Someone's mussed his hair just right, that perfect post-fight chaos that makes him look dangerous and untouchable and so stupidly hot that Shane wants to bite something.

Ilya swallowed hard, his mouth dry as paper.
"Alexei and Zarina..." He started, and the words felt strange, distant, as if they belonged to someone else's life. "...got into a car accident."
He felt Shane's hands lightly squeeze his waist, his husband's body tensing behind him. He turned around to face him and saw the shock in the brown eyes, the slow, terrible realization of what that could mean.
"Zarina died on the spot," Ilya continued, his voice monotonous, numb. "Alexei was severely injured. He's in a coma."
"And?" Shane asked, but Ilya knew he was already connecting the dots. He knew the family history, he knew Polina, he knew enough to see where this was going. "What about your nieces?"
"That's exactly why Sasha called me." Ilya ran his tongue over his chapped lips. "Polina, my dad's widow, would never take on that responsibility. She's always hated the girls, always treated them like a burden. And I..." His voice cracked for a second. "I'm the closest relative. The only one left."

“Yeah, there are beautiful women here.” Shane was zoned out, looking at the girlfriend’s nightstand now, which was home to a beautifully ornate table lamp, a tray of gold jewelry, and a photograph of her, much younger, with whom Shane presumed to be her father. He recognized, from the famous architecture in the background, that they were in Moscow.
“Lots of beautiful men here, too,” Ilya said, accent thickening. Shane dared to look up at him, and nearly gasped when he saw how hungry his gaze was. “Closer than I thought they’d be.”
