Summary
Rodrick's head snaps back with the force of being thrust into the counter, his back bending backwards where it hit the wood. He lets out a ragged breath, which comes a little wet, and he wonders whether some of the punches did actually break his ribs. It's not like he can feel it; even now the world is out of focus, and everything that could hurt him is far away. Like the man attempting to kill him, for example.
He's not bad looking, as far as would-be murderers go. A little less ragged than Rodrick would usually go for, this one is actually clean-shaven, with really nicely gelled-back hair that now falls over his forehead in exertion, drops of sweat building at his temples as he does his damnest to make sure only one of them sees the light of day. Rodrick can't help but smile, blood between his teeth and knowing damn well that there is no way this is how he goes. Nothing out there will let it.

When he left his castle and father, he had had no illusion about the world. He had knows, from word of mouth and from the questions he'd asked the huntsmen and traveling merchants, that there were a lot of things that would try to hurt him, and a good chunk of them that probably would. That had been a risk willingly taken, and one he had not regretted yet.
This was not the kind of beast that Mathias had heard of, of that he was sure. Wolves, bears, foxes, boars — all of them were things he had prepared for, as much as one could ever prepare for them.

Aube is very warm.
The bonfire was started a little earlier in the evening, and it had time to take, now flaming high and strong above the logs they’ve taken as seats. His fingers are also curled over what is either his second or third cup of wine, and he is starting to feel the effects in the slight haze that’s dropped over his eyes and the lightness in his limbs.
Ivoreth also has an arm around his waist, which might be playing a part in it all.
