Ilya Rozanov, the playboy darling of the oft-forgotten ECHL who never quite lived up to his full potential, spends the off-season hunting ghosts with his teammates Bood and Troy. When they dare to investigate the tragic ruins of NHL legend Shane Hollander's former cottage, they are expecting to be confronted by a cursed haunting, a vengeful demon, or at the very least... some entertaining Youtube-worthy content. What Ilya is not expecting, however, is to form an inexplicable bond with the ghost of a hot hockey player and discover that nothing (literally nothing at all) is quite as it seems.
OR; Shane is a ghost, Ilya can see dead people, and it's entirely possible that they once knew each other in a past life.

Somewhere between a thief-hero who can’t stop doing the right thing and the slow domestic work of sharing a kitchen, the future edges into the room. Then one offhand line changes the shape of everything, and they have to figure out what stays when the credits keep rolling.

But when a family member kills himself, fellow Boston Raider and friend Cliff Marleau decides that Ilya is going to therapy come hell or high water. Saying the words felt like a boulder had been lifted off his chest for a few blissful seconds before a whole mountain crashed down to take its place. What the fuck was he thinking? Saying something so pathetic, so needy, so utterly stupid over something so insignificant? Heat flooded his face, a different kind of shame, fresh and hot.

It had taken a few years, a few discreet hotel meetups, for Shane to finally bring it up. "You know...I always thought you were just a tiny bit better than the other guys on the league...slurs are low hanging fruit, Rozanov. I thought you were more creative than that." It didn't bother Shane. Not really. He was just sick of it, and, after losing to Boston, he wasn't in the mood to be called anything remotely effeminate.

Shane confronts Ilya over his use of terms like pretty boy and princess. Shane discovers something about himself he long thought was buried. ("Slur" is a term used very loosely in this fic; almost nonexistent. I used it as a term to springboard a miscommunication between Shane and Ilya).

He hit the green button and tucked the phone between his shoulder and his ear, trying to balance the plant. “Did you find your curdled cheese?” he asked by way of a greeting.
“Ilya,” Shane said, and Ilya’s spine stiffened. Shane’s voice was tight and slightly muffled. “Can you guys come to the entrance?”
Ilya set down the plant on the ground with a thunk. Yuna turned to look at him. Her nose flared at the sour scent of worry coming off of him.
“What happened?” Ilya growled. Something was wrong with his omega. He could feel it in his bones.
“What’s wrong?” Yuna snapped, setting down her bags, freeing her hands.
“We’re OK,” Shane said, trying and failing to sound soothing. “There was a fight, but we’re OK.”

Summary
Ilya's hand continues its path up and down Shane's back, and Shane thinks again about how love is sometimes just this: a palm on the spine, moving in circles, waiting for you to come back to yourself. There is no promise of saving you—Ilya cannot save him, they both know this and are alright with it in their own ways—but there is a vow of staying, lingering in order to witness. Touching the bruise so that its pain triggers the memory that you are allowed to be touched.
Outside, the snow continues its work of erasure. Inside, Shane's breathing begins to even out, every limb recalling how to be a man at rest rather than an animal fawning and freezing. The trembling subsides, wave by wave, as if Ilya's hand is smoothing it out of him.
"Sleep, зайчик," Ilya says softly, his free hand coming to rest in Shane's hair. "I have you."
This is not true, Shane thinks, and it is also the only true thing.
