Ed gets a better look, and sees a black ponytail and a sharp jaw, then looks away again, cheeks hot as he sits back down and starts hunting for another rock to throw. “Yeah,” he says. “Which you is that, exactly?”
“Don’t be a dick,” he answers, and sits down next to him, cross-legged and casual, starting to sift around in the sand for his own stone. Ed makes an educated guess.
“Ling?” he asks. It comes out quieter than he’d meant it, more hopeful. Ling smiles in that sun-bright way he has, and Ed’s heart stutters. Stupid, stupid.

Some nights, after everyone had gone to sleep and it was just him, he thought he would let the Fire Nation burn as many Earth Kingdom cities as they wanted if it meant that his dad could hold him close one more time and never have to let go. When Katara offered to stay behind, to let him see Dad, he was a hair's breadth away from agreeing.
But Sokka knew his sister better than he thought he knew himself sometimes. For all her talent and kindness, she didn't have the same mind for strategy; she'd never needed to rely on it like he had. And while they’d traveled, she had been too focused on mastering her bending, and then teaching Aang to do the same, to notice all the little things that could make the difference between a successful invasion and a tragedy. Sokka had been the one to take note of everything. He was the one with the experience, and he knew that if this plan failed, it wouldn't matter if he got to see Dad right now anyways because he'd never have the chance to keep him.So he let Katara go instead of him.

Nebula doesn’t especially like Mantis. Mantis is mostly ambivalent towards Nebula. But Mantis needs a ride, and Nebula’s got a ship. AKA Mantis and Nebula’s Road Trip of Revenge (and Love!).
Set in the period between GOTG2 and Infinity War. Title and inspiration from Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, and written for BugborgWeek2023 day 5: based on a song.

Mantis is not one to be blinded by outward appearance or demeanor- her very nature allows her to look past all that, whether she’s touching someone or not. But Nebula- Nebula has built up so many walls, inside and out, that the essence of her has somehow slipped past Mantis’s notice.
“Say what you mean, or don’t say anything at all,” Nebula says flatly.
“Love,” Mantis says. “You are so full of love.”

In which Nebula and Mantis are both practically overflowing with love for the universe surrounding them. Mantis is just better at showing it. A lil bugborg oneshot with a healthy heaping of Guardians found family, set sometime after Endgame and before GOTG3.

“Jesus, man, it sounds like you’re the one who needs to take a biology class.”
“Hold the sass,” he chides mildly, and she rolls her eyes but settles against him again. “A broken bone hurts like a bitch,” he says, “and for a while it doesn’t work like it should. Sometimes it feels like it might never hold you up again.”
She’s quiet, but it’s an attentive sort of silence, not like her blessedly increasingly rare moments of catatonia.
“But it heals, baby girl,” he tells her, adjusting her until he can get his arms around her, blanket bundle and all. He rests his chin on the top of her head and brings one hand up to squeeze the back of her neck gently, trying to coax the tense muscles loose. “Sometimes it still aches on rainy days-”
“Okay, Edgar Allen Joel.”
“-but you take those days, and you breathe through them, and eventually, they end.”

It’s not that Ellie means to stalk the couple she catches lurking in the shadows at 1 in the morning after sneaking out of her dorm because sitting in the room alone was making it hard to breathe, but fellow curfew-breakers can hardly expect privacy. All’s fair in love and rule-breaking or whatever their English teacher said in one of the rare classes when they were learning something not related to FEDRA policy.
And there’s something in the way the man holds his hand out to help pull the woman up over a crumbled brick wall that she just can’t look away from.
There’s a gentleness there despite his size and obvious strength that makes her breath catch for just a second. It’s too far for her to hear what they’re saying, but the woman says something with a little half-smile and presses her hand to the man’s shoulder, and the casual affection of the gesture fills her with a nameless want.
So, trailing them at a distance it is.
(AU in which Ellie follows Joel and Tess around and meets them with no Fireflies involved)

“I’m home,” he calls, sitting down on their entryway bench with a groan and working his boots off. “Ellie?” He calls when he doesn’t get a response. Her boots are haphazardly discarded by the door as usual, so he knows she’s home, but she only rarely doesn’t come barreling down the stairs the moment the door opens, making his heart skip a beat each time with fear that she’s about to take a header in her excitement.
Even after the call, however, no Ellie appears.
