And no matter what anyone said, Elrond knew they did not measure up to the lamblike paragons they had been made into in their absence, those emblems of saintly suffering.
It was easy to mourn the sweet, captive boy-princes cruelly snatched away by shadowy figures amidst the fire and rubble of their home, harder to reconcile those imagined martyrs with the men that returned, all flesh and blood and human frailty, flawed and changed, the enemy's tongue falling from their lips.

Elrond slid off his dress, which Frodo hadn’t expected. He wore a black sleeveless shirt beneath it. It was silk. There was a chain around his neck, but the pendant was beneath the neckline of his shirt. He took the Nauglamír and placed it around his pale throat. He glanced at his reflection and then looked away.
‘Oh,’ Frodo said, trying to find words to say that fit the feeling which flooded him. Elrond stared back at him, with the Nauglamír tight about his neck, with his arms bare, with his hair pooling black on the floor around him, with the moon on his skin. ‘Elrond,’ Frodo said, and that came out as a single breath. ‘I just want to worship you.’
Elrond’s eyes were grey twilight in the night. They carried stars.
‘Don’t,’ he said. ‘Please. I'd rather you love me.’

“It will resolve.” Elros twirled the flower between his fingers. Like this it did not seem so bad, simply pale and pink. “You can give me a day in our room, can’t you? After he sees I am a man.”
Elros would not be deterred, Elrond saw, and so set about convincing himself instead. Elros needed him to believe. If outsiders thought them children, that was one thing. If Elrond thought them children, it might just be true.
The end of childhood is a rupture.
