He paused for a moment, then winced like she had punched him. “Yeah. Alright. Huckleberry, shutting the fuck up.”
“No, I - shit, sorry, I wasn’t trying to - I will gladly listen to you rant about your parents whenever you want, but - but Mel just walked into the bar. With Dr. Fucking Langdon.”
The relief lasted only a second before the meaning of her words registered - Mel and Dr. Langdon - and he was cranking around in his seat to take a look. “What? Where?”

“Mel,” Frank said softly, “can I tell you something?”
“Yes,” Mel replied, even softer, her gaze flicking back and forth from one eye to the other. “You can tell me anything.”
A dark look shadowed his face for a second before he leaned back in his seat, braced his hands against the steering wheel until his arms were completely straight, and blew a raspberry.
Then he exhaled roughly - similar to the raspberry, but without so much involvement of the lips. “You can’t judge,” he told her then, glancing in her direction. “Okay?”
She was resisting the urge to start twirling her butterfly ring around her finger. “Just tell me, Frank,” she said, “you’re making me nervous.”
“I’m trying, I’m trying. Not to make you nervous, I’m trying to tell you. That…” He looked away from her again, back out the car window, and clenched his fists around the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. Then he dropped his hands in his lap. “I had a sex dream the other night,” he told her, with a weird sense of finality. “About you.”

Sparrow closed his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose with two fingers. He was sure he was smearing charcoal across his face, but he hardly cared. “I’m 21 and we’ve all received combat training, I can take care of myself.”

Going to college was a good thing. Sparrow was living a normal life, he was striving for achievement, and he wasn't sitting around San Dimas with their dad and too many weapons. He was happy here, really. The fact that he missed Lark like a phantom limb didn't mean he wasn't happy.
