And then soft, so soft Ellie barely hears from all the way over on her staircase, ear angled down towards the slats in the railing, breath held while awaiting a reply. She needs the truth, too. She deserves the truth. After all of this. The blood on her hands, on her face, on her memories. She gets to know why. Why after all this shit, none of it was even worth it.
What Ellie once believed to be heavy, uneven breathing, she comes to realize, is quiet, fractured sobbing. “I can’t lose her,” he confesses, an omission to what Ellie already knew from the second she woke up in the back of that car, woozy and light and empty. Bare legs, cold and exposed in a hospital gown. The whole car reeked of human blood and sweat, while her skin was the cleanest, the purest, it had been in months.
“I couldn’t let ‘em take her, Tommy.”
It’s all the answer she needs.

It aches. Physical, cutting pain that wells in her throat and stings in her eyes. Confirmation of the fear that sits with her in her bed at night, curled up next to her on the ratty old mattress. It rises in her chest when the other girls cut their eyes her way before giggling behind cupped hands. It rings in her ears in the silence of the hole, an unfriendly ghost that won’t leave her alone like everyone else has.
No one wants her. No one ever has.

“Someone get Tommy! Get Maria!”
Ellie perks up, wondering why they’re being yelled for so frantically. Though Jackson is run by the Council, Maria and Tommy are the ones people often go to first when something goes wrong. There’s a wide variety of reasons that they could be being yelled for – god, once the two of them were forced to come running because a cat got stuck in a tree – but something about this time unsettles her.
She walks away from Shimmer, who whinnys when the rest of the carrots she’d been gobbling up end up back in Ellie’s pocket, but Ellie leaves with a pat and a distracted “be back soon.” Being in the stables with Shimmer is one of the only places she feels truly at peace. Her mind conjures thoughts of another place, but that house, that person, have been off the table for years.
Another round of shouting for the two occurs, and Ellie jogs over to the main street to see what’s going on.
There’s a flurry of activity at the clinic, and Ellie’s heart drops to her stomach. Someone got hurt, she thinks. But who, and why were people shouting for Tommy and Maria? They aren’t doctors, and usually only family get yelled for when someone is injured.
Oh god, Ellie thinks. No.

I’m supposed to protect her, and I’ve already failed her too many times. You can’t take her from me.

“I do,” Marlene says softly, sounding pained. “Her mother was my best friend. I was there when she was born, Joel. I held her as a baby, watched her sneak out and get into trouble as she grew up. But I have a job to do.” There’s a moment of silence, tense hesitation, and Joel feels his chest crack in two before she even draws breath to continue. “And you’re too late - she’s already gone.”

He knows from the moment he sees Joel helping the girl down from the horse she’s on that something’s up. There’s an ease to the movement that says he almost certainly helped her up on the horse as well, and the way she moves with absolute trust that he won’t let her fall says there’s a bond there that’s had time to develop.
The girl sticks close to Joel’s side, eyes wary, as he guides her back over.
“This is Ellie,” Joel says before turning to her. “This is my brother, T-”
“Tommy, yeah. I heard. Not all of us have shit ears, grandpa.”
He blinks at the comment, but Joel doesn’t seem offended, even as he rolls his eyes.
This is his second hint.

Her ears are ringing when they pull her away. Joel took the brunt force of the flash bang, swinging her around like she weighed nothing to curl around her, but she’s just the slightest bit wobbly when they try to take her away from him, still on the ground.
Doesn’t stop her from screaming for him, though.
Even half out of it, Joel always answers when she calls, and she sees him trying to stagger onto his knees, calling back for her.
Then a soldier hits him on the back of the head.
And Ellie sees fucking red.

Like how the space between his brows gets wrinkled whenever he gets absorbed into one of Izuku’s “shitty chick flicks,” creasing further in defiance when he’s caught.

“Nothin’ big. Hit me a few times. Asked if they should, if I thought they should wake you up. Said no.” The nerd pauses, and the moment drags on. He sucks in a breath through his teeth, the sound whistling and thin. “Wanted to let you sleep.”
Katsuki lets out a humorless bark of laughter.
“Wha’s so funny?” Deku squints at him through his one working eye.
“My hero,” Katsuki says. “Of course you fuckin’ told them to let me sleep. God."

"So…" Lee Fletcher started tentatively, "is Percy alive?"
The thought that Percy died in the eruption shook everyone in the room to their core. Not only because he was a great and loyal friend, but because he was supposed to be the one of the great prophecy.
In which following the eruption caused by Percy at Mount Saint Helens, instead of landing on Calypso's Island, Percy is thrown far back into the Labyrinth and captured by the titans. Annabeth must continue on her quest alone while Percy fights for survival.

Percy's leg was in a hellhound's mouth.
It was around 4:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, and Percy was laying in a random alley somewhere in Manhattan while a hellhound used his left leg as a chew toy after crushing and clawing the limb with its massive paw. Somewhere behind him, he couldn't really tell anymore, Annabeth was fighting empousai, though he could barely hear her through the roaring in his ears. Last he'd checked, there were two left, but he couldn't be sure how long ago that was, because, just to reiterate, his leg was in a hellhound's mouth.
