stranger things fic cuz im shattered
(spoilers obviously)- set during and after episode 9, season 4
Eddie Munson is in Steve Harrington's basement. A man who was dead an hour ago in his Steve's basement.
And nobody knew -- besides Dustin of course. And Steve didn't really know why he didn't tell his best friends that /their/ best friend wasn't ripped open on the floor of the Upside Down, and instead was underneath Steve's fingertips. His fingers that nursed him back to life and hid him from Hawkins and from a life-long prison sentence.
But, inevitably, their friends did find out (he can't really keep a secret like that for long). And maybe a couple beers, a cigarette, and a joint, made Steve realize that maybe his crush on Nancy was his brain covering something else up all along.-max isn't in a coma; only injured a bit

Summary

After Dustin ends up in a coma trying to save Eddie, the group turns a cold shoulder toward the metalhead. Eddie, figuring they just need time, distances himself and waits for someone to reach out. No one ever did.
Until Steve showed up drunk on his doorstep. Eddie was relieved at first, until he realized what he was there for. As much as he hated it, being used, he loved it all the same. -

He was supposed to be smarter than this. The guilt that Dustin had been pushing away, all too aware of just how toxic it would be to embrace, was now beginning to leak its way past the walls he’d put up. He should’ve grabbed a bottle of aerosol and a lighter before going back to Eddie, should’ve moved faster, landed better so he hadn’t twisted the hell out of his ankle, should’ve, should’ve should’ve. And Eddie should’ve never tried to be a hero.
Meanwhile, a strangled cry ripped open the static, eternal night of the Upside Down. Eddie Munson was choking.

On indefinite hiatus!
Okay, so not only is Steve Harrington apparently not a douche, but he’s also kind of a mess?
Now that Eddie is properly looking, he notices the slight bags under Steve’s eyes and how his face is drawn, as if he hasn’t been getting enough sleep. That doesn’t make sense– Eddie would think that Steve is living a cushy life, with his mansion and parents that probably pamper him like a goddamned baby. This Steve doesn’t look pampered at all; instead, Eddie can see a familiar haunted look in his eyes that screams he’s just like you.

If you looked up the definition of "fucked-up" in the dictionary, Steve Harrington's face would be plastered right next to it. After living through two Upside-Down debacles now, it makes sense. Eddie Munson doesn't know about that, but he does notice how similar he and the former King of Hawkins High really are.
