The male – not quite as tall as Cassian, but perhaps just as bulky, had been eyeing her from the moment she’d first arrived in this gods’ forsaken place for training. She knew he’d just been biding his time before taking a shot.
Typical male behavior, if she ever saw it.
“I belong where I please,” Nesta replied, making an effort to step around him.
Instead, he stepped towards her, and a large, rough hand landed on her shoulder, heavy through the fabric of her jacket, pushing her back.
“I’m not finished.” He snarled, leaning in close enough that she could smell the ale on his breath. “Someone ought to remind you of your manners when a male is speaking to you.”
“Do not,” she warned, angling out from his hold, “put your hands on me.”

“Nesta.”
She doesn’t turn. Doesn’t move.
The bond in his chest is screaming. Her emotions crash over him in waves—despair, worthlessness, exhaustion, and underneath it all, a terrible calm. The calm of someone who’s made a decision.
“Step down.” His voice comes out harder than he intends. The voice of a general. But inside, he’s begging for her to listen.
“Go away.” Her voice is hollow. Empty. Nothing like the sharp, cutting tone he’s used to. Nothing like the fire he’s always admired.
This is worse than her anger. It’s defeat.
“No.” He takes a careful step closer, hands out like he’s approaching a spooked animal. “I’m not leaving.”
“I don’t want you here.”
“I don’t care.” Another step. The bond is pulling tight in his chest, urging him closer. Keep her safe. Keep her alive. “I’m not leaving you alone.”
He feels a flicker of something. Confusion, maybe. Or frustration that he won’t just let her do this.
“Please,” she whispers, and the word breaks his heart. “Please just go.”
“Not a chance, sweetheart.”

"I said I'm fine." The words come out sharper than she intends, but another cramp is building and she needs to get out of here before she breaks down in front of them. Before they have more ammunition to use against her.

Determined not to show weakness, she pushes through the pain until she collapses during training the next morning. When Cassian discovers the extent of her suffering, everything changes.

As he said the words, a bellow that echoed off the walls, Cassian took a step forward, towards her, as if he was unable to resist pulling in her direction, when they fought like this.
But she didn't meet him halfway, as she had in the past.
No, instead, when his body moved, Nesta flinched.
Flinched so violently that she yielded two steps back, her body stumbling over the chair behind her, the silverware rattling with the force of it.

In Cassian’s mind, he wrote sonnets to this moment. Committed the view, the way she didn’t recoil from his gaze or sink deeper into the water, to his permanent memory. In his mind, he told her how achingly beautiful she was. How brave she was. He fell to his knees, dinner tray be damned, and sobbed. Admitted that the moments in which he thought she had been taken from him were the worst of his 500 years of life. Worse than any pain he could fathom. Cassian was no stranger to pain, always managed it with a stiff upper lip and a few bad jokes.
He knew, in that moment, that if Nesta had not returned from the depths of Oorid, neither would he. He would have rather the Middle claimed his immortal soul than face the reality of leaving that place without her.
In his mind, Cassian said all of that.
Out loud, he barely managed, “I … You.”
