He looks up at the mob of people staring down at them through the window. Their beady eyes pierce and their heads tilt so they can see from way above, where John can’t reach. There’s an insurmountable distance that looms and glass that keeps him closed off in a little display. He hopes they’re getting a good view from up there.
Down here, it’s just John and the bodies. There’s only two. Three, counting the one under his boot. When he blinks, his mind conjures more, face down in the bloody dirt, spread across the field with artful brutality. His knuckles are bruised and red and white. He clenches them, resisting the urge to split Zeke’s head in front of everyone.
