    Gintoki is not expecting his former rival/friend/enemy/ally to show up at his door unprompted. Much less looking like a wet puppy, drenched in the evening rain and with a bafflingly apologetic expression on his face, so much so that Gintoki has to blink twice to make sure it really is Takasugi and not someone else wearing his features for nefarious purposes or a shapeshifting Amanto or something equally ridiculous and plausible.

    After so many years and all those wasted chances, Gintoki and Takasugi try to get started.

    When he kisses him under the knee, Takasugi shudders, throwing the other arm over his face too. Defenceless. Submissive. It makes Gintoki's mouth water and his dick twitch and his heart actually swell somewhere in the midst of all lascivious thoughts racing through his mind at the moment.

    "It's okay, you know," he tries telling Takasugi as if his words could ever reach him.

    "What?"

    "Everything. Everything's okay. Can be okay."

    Takasugi laughs at him in his hysteric, sharp way, lips curling into a broken sneer.

    "Just shut up and fuck me already."

    "Listen." Gintoki rubs his neck and he has a modicum of decorum to look slightly guilty. "I'm sorry, but you really should stop with all the fourth wall breaking, okay? It isn't helping anyone."

    "Then what should I do instead? I'm not supposed to be here in the first place, I—" Takasugi falters, suddenly lost for words, more frustrated and tired than angry. "I don't belong."

    Gintoki looks up at him again, and this time he's really looking at him, not at some version of him that is supposed to play a student in the Ginpachi-sensei's class Z anime. Then, he stands up from his chair, and now Takasugi has to raise his head. Their height difference, for some reason, feels even more prominent now, as if the power imbalance between them is actually real. Takasugi's hand aches for the hilt of his katana but it isn't there.
