Ilya swung toward Jason Caine, the hulking defenseman Boston had acquired from Pittsburgh in a recent trade. Ilya was still figuring the quiet, stoic man out. “Theories?”
“Yeah. I tell her she reads too much fanfic.” With a fond grin, he slung his bag over his shoulder. “Anyway, see you guys in the morning.”
"Wait," Marleau cut in, turning to Jason. “Now you got me curious as hell. What’s your wife’s theory?”
"Yes Caine. What is this theory?"

Since Shane’s Calvin Klein campaign dropped, it somehow escaped the hockey bubble entirely and spilled into the general public. There are countless TikToks now—not even from hockey fans, just regular people—posting about his husband in tight white briefs that leave very little to the imagination. Every sports show seems obligated to mention Shane Hollander’s Calvin Klein campaign. It’s inescapable in a way neither of them had expected.
At first, Ilya thought it was fun. He was glad the world finally saw his husband as the sexy, talented man he’d always known him to be. He liked interacting with fan posts and edits, even sending them to Shane just to watch the way his face would immediately redden.
But now, the public reaction is a little… much.

The puppy sniffed the hard plastic toe of Shane's skate, and then sat down squarely on his foot, as if claiming territory.
“If we leave the dog,” Ilya said, “you will think about it all night. You will play like shit tomorrow. And then I will have to listen to you be sad about that for a week.”
A defeated sound escaped Shane. “…Damn it.”
After a secluded practice session, Shane and Ilya find a cold golden retriever in the middle of a snowstorm. Shane does not spiral (he does). Ilya absolutely does not get jealous of a puppy (he does).
Or: A snowstorm traps Shane and Ilya in a hotel room with a tiny golden retriever, a power outage, and entirely too much time to be honest with themselves.

“A bet,” Shane repeats, eyes flashing. “Like what?”
The reporter cuts in. “What about wearing the other player’s jersey?”
They both turn to her, and Shane says, “Like, the loser wears the winner’s jersey?”
“Maybe at the next game in a couple of months?”
“Is a good idea,” Ilya muses, nudging Shane’s elbow. “You will look better in my jersey than in Montreal jersey.”
Shane makes a low noise, his eyes holding a bit of a spark when he looks back to Ilya. It’s what Ilya was hoping for—the tiniest crack in the mask. He can see a hint of exasperated affection around the corners of Shane’s eyes, a little bit of fire burning just beneath the surface. It sends a thrill down Ilya’s spine, and he wonders if Shane will be snarky when Ilya gets him naked tonight.
“That’s not happening,” Shane replies, shaking his head. “Because you’re not winning.”
