He smoothed his collar one more time, checked for any stray hairs… and then before he could second-guess himself any further, he shut off the lights and stepped outside.

Vex—or whatever his name was—was still talking overhead. The words swam in and out of Gabriel’s ears; something about a success, some medical or technical babble he understood none of. His first two words kept repeating in Gabriel’s thoughts, turning over and over. Very good. Very good. Very good.
Was this good? Was he good? Was he what they’d wanted? He hoped so; otherwise he was a murderer and a failure.

Put that way, the prospect of just one more game doesn't seem all that bad. It seems… really nice, actually, one more moment of leaf-dappled shaded and golden sunset, of cool earth and warmth clinging to her skin. One more moment of Gem in her life before a long, lonely winter.
“Yeah, sure,” she sighs, as though she hasn't just caved embarrassingly easily.
The smile Gem gives her in return is wide, a little too wide for them to maintain the illusion of humanity. Have their teeth always been so sharp?

“I’unno… It’s just been an awful long time on the road.” He shoveled down a mouthful of food just to escape talking. Samson, accursedly, waited for him to finish chewing. “I can’t explain it well. But don’t you ever think about a change of pace? About goin’ somewhere we never gone before? About maybe gettin’ a house or somethin’? Settlin’ down like… like real people do?”

Summary
It starts as a joke, much like everything else in this cyclical death-game Grian’s been thrown into (mostly) (kind of) (okay, not really) against his will. They’re the Villains! So, even though none of them are the boogeyman, he and Gem pepper the sand dunes in front of their house with pitfalls.
“It makes sense,” Gem justifies to a wary Pearl. “We’re allowed to defend our base! Especially with all those boogeymen out there.” She shudders theatrically.

Mother's day has always been difficult for Grace. Anything to do with mothers has been difficult since losing her. Having forgotten her when he woke up in space doesn't make it any better. It only means he has to cycle through every terrible memory again.

Rocky stomps one of his limbs. "No. Rocky want to know about Grace parent."
"Fine, fine. When you go back to Erid and they ask why you're a Grace expert and not a human expert, don't come crying to me. My parents were... Let's see..." Grace frowns. His chest lights up with a strange warmth when he thinks of them, a gentle joy with dread creeping around the corners like a cozy Sunday night with the week looming ahead. He knows he loved them and that he was loved in return. Everything else, though, draws a blank. Grace's shoulders slump. "I don't remember. Sorry, Rocky."

Summary
When Rocky wakes up after Adrian, he's relieved they're both alive, but immediately knows that something is off with Grace. He's having trouble breathing, sleeping a lot, and spiking fevers. As much as Grace wants to blame it on lung irritation from the ammonia in Rocky's atmosphere, Rocky knows he's downplaying it, and it's not going to work.
However, before he can actually do anything about it, the ship's power goes out. Taumoeba have gotten into the fuel and eaten all the astrophage, leaving them with no choice but to steal from the beetles.
Which are on the outside of the ship.
Which means two EVAs and a lot of lab work for Grace, all while his condition declines from what's quickly turning into a serious health problem. All Rocky can do is make sure he has what he needs and try to take care of him as best he can from afar, hoping they can get to safety before Grace's health is too fragile to recover.Bookmarked by motheyes
