“My what?!” says El, wide-eyed, and then, better than Liesel could even time it, the evening call to prayer sounds out along with church bells, an echoing, holy cacophony of what must be half a dozen different muezzins and bells, the sound bouncing and doubling almost eerily around the neighborhood.

Mira didn’t even know what she was waiting for. She told Zoey that they should wait, but wait for what, exactly?
The thought of just coming up to Rumi and going, “Hey, we find your patterns sexy, wanna take off your clothes so we can admire it and maybe have a threesome?” was becoming more and more appealing by the day.
But that wasn’t romantic, and it definitely wasn’t something that Mira would consider saying out loud at the risk of embarrassing herself in case Rumi found it weird.

Both of their shirts had ridden up to their armpits, hastily shoved out of the way without even bothering to remove them fully. Mira’s hand twitching slowly, expertly, somewhere below Zoey’s waistband as they kissed each other hungrily, like they'd been starving for it. There was a practiced sort of ease the pair moved with, like it was another of Mira’s complexly choreographed dances for just the two of them, one they knew by heart. This wasn't the first or even the thirtieth time they'd done this, Rumi suddenly realized.
She told herself to move, feeling like she was intruding on something sacred that very much did not involve her. But her feet were glued to the floor, her eyes fixed on the two of them, on their movement.
