[Sokka is five when the first mark appears.
It writes itself in a deep red like a wound, as if someone had carved the word “nonbender” in a messy font across the knuckles of his left hand, as if it was handwritten with a knife.
When he asks his mother, as she applies salve on Sokka’s knuckles, she sighs deeply and says nothing for a few moments.
“Sometimes, spirits don’t make much sense.”
Sokka has yet to turn thirteen when he wakes up screaming in pain, about ten soulmarks all over each other between his left shoulder and his ear, red and vivid like burning flesh. Among the few words that are somehow possible to read out of the disastrous scribbling, “disrespectful” and “coward” and “burned” and “sorry sorry sorry” are the ones that stand out the most to Sokka. He thinks, at the tender age of twelve, whoever did this to his soulmate will be sorry too, one day.
A month after Hakoda leaves him with the job of the protector at the age of thirteen, Sokka realizes, with a bitter taste in his mouth, that he’s got more soulmarks than his entire village combined.]
Or, to have a soulmark is to carry the vilest things that your soulmate believes about themselves on your skin.

Is it strange to say I miss before? When we were all together? I know that’s terrible to say– we were at the height of the war and fighting for our lives. Sorry, I don’t know what I’m saying anymore. While trying to stop himself from falling, Chen had been flailing his arms in a desperate attempt to regain his balance. All his flailing manages to do, however, is smack his arm into one of the torches lining the wall. The force of his arm hitting the torch causes it to fall from its holder. Chen watches from the floor in horror as the torch falls, and somehow, somehow, on its way down, the flame touches the portrait of Fire Lord Sozin. Which then begins to catch fire. Chen feels like he’s watching everything happen in slow motion as the portrait is slowly being eaten up by flames. The portrait of Fire Lord Sozin is on fire holy shit.
Chen thinks he’s going to faint.
Or, times Fire Lord Zuko was nice and people were surprised, and one time everyone expected it.

”C’mere, real quick before I go,” Shouta’s voice calls out. Hizashi, without another word, stumbles over to Shouta, who is in the process of slipping his shoes on.
”Did you forget something?” Hizashi asks genuinely. Shouta tips his head into a small nod.
”Yeah, this.”
A hand clasps around the collar of his shirt, and Hizashi doesn’t have enough time to react before Shouta pulls him in for a chaste kiss. Hands scramble to find the fabric of Shouta’s scarf while Hizashi's lips envelop Shouta’s. He grips onto the scarf for dear life as he leans into the slightly shorter man, trying to press himself closer, but Shouta pulls back after a few seconds and releases Hizashi’s shirt. It ends just as quickly as it began.
“That’s for flirting with me,” he comments, a little out of breath, but still blank eyed as ever. There’s nothing more than drunken eyes with red cheeks that cement their place in Hizashi’s mind.

Shouto sits up in the bed to watch him as he slips into the hallway, hands clutching the stuffie on his lap. His blanket is baby pink fleece, well worn in from frequent washing, and every time he looks at the thing, Touya sees five-year-old Shouto clinging to it as their father tried to take it from him, shouting angrily.
When he steps back into his own room, Touya expects to see Shouto still sitting up and waiting for him.
He’s lying down again, curled up against Keigo’s chest. Keigo’s hand rubs his back in slow passes, almost covering the narrow width of Shouto’s body. They’re both quiet, just even breathing and the rustle of bedding disturbing the quiet stillness. Touya stands in the doorway, watching with a sudden, fluttering tightness in his chest; the way his little brother turns his face into Keigo’s shoulder and sighs drowsily.

Touya had filed for emergency custody of Shouto just over a year ago, immediately after removing him from the house in a panic, and Shouto had been officially under his care for the foreseeable future. The custody wasn’t temporary anymore.
