Summary
The Forest Ealdor lies between Camelot and Cenred’s kingdom and is well-known to be full of magical creatures. At the start of the purge, many sorcerers and magic users fled into the forest, hoping that the magic would protect them. Any of Uther’s men who ventured into the trees were lost, turned around, or vanished, so, instead, Uther ordered his knights to burn the forest to the ground. When people and creatures fled from the flames, they were caught by Camelot’s men (and Cenred’s, who agreed to turn over the sorcerers to Uther) and executed.
It burned for seven days. When the fire died and Uther sent his men out into it, they discovered complete silence– the trees and plants had survived, magically untouched by the fire, but there was no living animal nor man amongst the greenery. They also reported a sense of deep unease, feelings of being watched, and random bursts of terror and panic. Uther decided to leave Ealdor and declare the forest forbidden. Anyone discovered there would be arrested on suspicion of having magic.

Joel closed his eyes and Ellie swore she could see the anger welling up inside him before he swallowed it back down. It was both humiliating and vindicating, watching him feel that for her. She wanted to tell him she could take care of herself, that she didn’t need his protectiveness. What’s done was done and she survived, so he could fucking get over it already.
She wanted to watch him hunt David down and kill him over and over until she felt normal again.
She wanted him to fold her up into his arms and never let go.

Darnell scoffed and looked to Robby, expression going decidedly unimpressed. "Oh, yeah? You here to find yourself? Have an adventure? Do something hard?" he asked, each question more mocking than the last.
And there was that question again, like it was haunting Robby. He stifled his instinct to bite back and kept it simple: "I'm here to help."

i have never wanted a fic to be a movie so desperately bad. i know I’ll be rereading and rereading this. Gorgeous original characters, absolutely perfect characterization of Robby and Abbot, i literally want to live in the bittersweet intimate scenes.
I’m not great with military fics, I get too angry. The fact that this felt so honest and complex that I loved it so deeply…… props, man….. props.

Playing with both the crossover of genre conventions between Stede's universe and Izzy and Ed's original one, but basically doing a deep dive into trauma response and navigating complex relationships between the crew and Izzy when Izzy is forced into a position where he has to share revealing and intimate things about himself. Lots of focus on the aftermath of abuse and trauma, playing with freeze responses and the way the different crewmembers navigate all this.

dialogue + characterization is so good, I can hear the actors voices in my head the whole time, realistic but not annoying take on jealousy and fluidity of relationships. big fan <3 lots of giggling <312/13/25 reread; the last 5 chapters or so are some of the sweetest loveliest writing I’ve ever read I am so deeply emotional. From how this one starts you really don’t expect it to settle down so warmly, but it does.
