Summary
It’s not Buck’s fault that he hasn’t stopped running since the day he ran from Hershey and never went back.
It’s not Buck’s fault that the only way Eddie knows how to handle the overwhelming-ness of his stupidly loving heart is to treat Buck like he treats Christopher - as someone to provide for, to look after, to dote on.
It’s not Buck’s fault that the lightning hit him, and it’s not his fault that he died for three minutes and seventeen seconds, and it’s not his fault that when he first wakes up, he looks at Eddie like Eddie is a ghost and Buck will never be able to touch him again.
Which he doesn’t, anyway. Touch him, that is. Not like he used to.
OR
Buck is doing just fine after getting hit by lightning until he's not. Eddie's there to help pick up all of the pieces, except they have sharp edges and all they do is hurt.

Summary
Allison wanders more, not ready for the sleep to end, and takes in the breadth of nothing in which she’s draped her house. The fad of void that reflects her heart completely, or else does not at all, and to such a frightening degree she can hardly think it. What if Claire hates it here? What if Claire hates it everywhere? What if Claire has powers and Allison was right, always right to not want kids? What if the nightmares are premonitions and Reginald comes into the dark empty house and rends the child from her breast and talks about finally having a useful seventh and there’s still milk on Claire’s little lip and Allison can’t do anything can’t even breathe and the worst part is that maybe Claire is better off because at least Reginald can do something other than ache.

VHS Tape
No sound availableFlashes of static accompany a droning buzzing sound. The picture flickers to life.
The room is dark, lit only by a weak singular light source from above.
In the centre of the frame a man is tied to a chair. His head is folded down to show matted blonde curls.
A second figure walks into shot from behind the camera. His face is hidden by a black ski mask. He pulls the hair of the unknown victim back to show his face to the camera. He is bloodied and bruised, but the fluttering of his closed eyelids prove him to be alive.

Summary
“I hate this job!” Buck exclaims, suddenly scrabbling for his helmet. He pulls it off, then yanks off the oxygen mask too. Both drop to the floor.
“Woah, hey—” Eddie inches closer. “What are you doing? Put your mask—”
“I hate you!”
Eddie does a double-take.
Buck starts to cough. It’s obvious now that his face is unnaturally flushed.
-OR-
Buck gets heatstroke on the job. Eddie has to cool him down. Except Eddie's moving to El Paso soon, so the whole thing is actually about that.

After sustaining an injury on shift, Buck stays with Bobby and Athena while he recovers. They discover some hard truths about Buck's childhood.
___
Athena had never known a time before Buck was confident in his body. That’s why it takes her so long to realize that despite how self-assured he’s always seemed when it comes to existing in his own skin—she’s never seen him shirtless.
She’s never wondered why before—it’s never even crossed her mind to wonder. At least, not until she walks into the kitchen and catches Bobby trying to convince Buck to take his shirt off so they can check his over his wounds acquired on a recent call.

Summary
Buck sat up too fast, wincing as his muscles protested. His eyes darted around the room—clean. No broken porcelain. No shattered mugs. Just a glass of water on the coffee table and Eddie, still here.
He rubbed his face with both hands. “Shit,” he muttered. “I—God, I’m sorry.”
Eddie didn’t move. “You don’t have to be.”
Buck let out a bitter laugh. “I trashed my apartment. I cried all over you. I probably screamed. And you’re still here.”
Eddie shrugged, like it was the simplest thing in the world. “Of course I’m still here.”
Buck looked away, jaw tight. “I lost it.”

Summary
Eddie wakes from the sleep of the truly exhausted and registers mild surprise at being horizontal. His neck doesn't hurt. Buck is dead. The facts fade back in in that order and Eddie takes in a shuddering breath, reaching for Chris - who isn't there.
He shoots upright, and hears a snort of laughter behind him. "Dude, you've reached levels of bedhead most of us could only dream of. Don't freak out, Chris woke up around midnight and I put him to bed, but you looked like you needed the sleep."
Eddie turns his head slightly, and then he can't move. It's like some kind of fucked up sleep paralysis except instead of the hat man, it's the specter of his dead best friend. Who does not, in fact, seem to be dead.

Summary
It hadn’t made the right sound.
Buck had always thought it’d be a SHINK, or maybe a SQUELCH. Either cutting and sharp, or imprecise and sloppy. But no. He’d been wrong. Very, very wrong.
It had been quick. Abrupt. Something muffled and blunt that no amount of movies or video games or his own imagination could ever prepare him for. Not for that. Not for the real thing.
THWACK.
It hadn’t made the right sound.

Summary
Buck’s doing fine.
Sure, his leg hurts, and every time he blinks he finds himself on Eddie’s couch, the realtor’s sizzling voice in the background, and it sends such a jolt across his spine that he has to hold onto the nearest wall. Sure, he hasn’t spoken to Christopher in what must have been months, his pillowcase still smells of Tommy, and hell, there are more than three dozens of oatmeal raisin cookies in his kitchen, and he fucking hates raisins. Then there is Maddie, pregnant again, walking towards the edge again, and the real cherry on top, now Eddie, asking him to bring some boxes on his way to help with packing and–
No. It's fine. Buck's doing just fine.

Summary
“Why are you acting like this isn’t a big deal?” His voice was raised, but he wasn’t yelling. “Buck, you have been living out of a storage unit for weeks! You’re in pain, you’re hungry, and you’re— You’re homeless. You have no home."
Eddie had such a way with words. You have no home. Very nice of him.
“What do you want me to do, Eddie?” He put the measuring cup down with enough force that it bounced to the floor. “Breakdown and cry? Get on my knees and beg someone for a loan? I took what I could.”
“No, you didn’t.” Eddie’s cursed index finger came up, pointing right at Buck’s chest. “Because you didn’t tell anyone! We would’ve helped you. I would’ve helped you.”
“I don’t want anyone’s help,” Buck pressed. “I got myself into this situation, and I can get myself out. I always do.”
Eddie held both his hands up, but they dropped as something dawned on him. Misery flooded his features. “You took over my lease.”
The last thing Buck wanted to do was make Eddie feel guilty. His decisions put him where he was— Nobody else’s. Still, his head fell. “Yeah, Eddie. I did.”

Buck supposes in a way, he’s always been a little obsessive.
When a thought grips him—a fear—he’s rarely able to let go of it again. It digs its little claws into his brain and makes a home inside his head until eventually, it relents and loosens its hold. Sometimes, it’s only to make room for a new fear. Other times, it simply disappears on its own.
It’s just something he’s learned to live with—something he can live with.
And then he gets struck by lightning.
