    Summary

Peter and Morse have accidentally moved in next-door to each other, George Fancy is annoyingly new enough for them to set their differences aside, and the "Quartet" case takes their interest.

Peter shakes out a new cigarette. “Bets on this new DC taking your spot as bagman.”

    Morse scowls. “He won’t.”

“The gaffer has a soft spot for newbies.” He hopes he doesn’t sound as jealous as he thinks he does.

“I think I know Fancy from when we were both in uniform,” says Strange, unsurprisingly, because Strange knows everyone. “Nice guy.”

“If he turns out to be some annoying little twit you can take him then. I’d rather suffer opera boy than some new twat.” Teaching anyone the ropes sounds like Peter’s worst idea of hell. At least Morse knows what he’s doing and does actually follow Peter’s orders, even when he doesn’t want to.

    “I’m right here,” says Morse.

Peter shoots him his best withering glare. “I noticed, opera boy. You haven’t stopped clicking that fucking pen for two hours.”

Morse lifts the pen, keeping direct eye contact, and starts to click it again.

    Summary

Peter Jakes can't believe Morse almost got eaten by a tiger, only in Oxford. He supposes it's only natural that Morse would have nightmares about it, although all he can offer is milk and biscuits.

“I don’t know what I’m doing here,” says Morse, but he doesn’t get up.

Peter nudges the packet of biscuits closer to him. “What were you dreaming about?”

“Today.” Morse takes one, his fingers are slightly shaky. “The tiger. What about you?”

“The tiger,” he agrees. Morse looks almost surprised, like he didn’t almost die today, like that’s not worth Peter’s time to be dreaming about.

    Summary

Peter and Morse have another case near Lake Silence at the imposing Carcester House, the murder of Eric Forrest, scholarship boy living side by side with one of the posh sets that put Peter's teeth on edge. In other news, Morse should stop having a mouth and fingers and pretty eyes.

He drifts out again calling over his shoulder, “Have you got any ties I can borrow?”

He rolls his eyes, grabbing his suit jacket and an extra tie out of his wardrobe. “How the hell do you run out of ties?”

Morse turns around from where he’s grabbing the jam out of Peter’s cupboard. “Yesterday’s was my last one and I was going to do a wash last night but there was that paperwork…” He waves the plate at him before dropping it and the jam on the table. “Bit burnt, sorry. And then my pen exploded so now – Have you got any extra pens?”

    Summary

Snippets of Peter and Morse basically living together, really taking that 'love thy neighbour' a bit far.

A partner is what Peter has been looking for his whole life, really. Decades of feeling apart from everything and everyone else. Decades of attempting to look like them, talk like them, forget what made him different. And now here was Morse, fully aware of Peter’s past and accepting him still. And here was Morse, beside him still.

    Summary

Peter and Morse have moved in together, it's not all fair sailing. The trials and tribulations of meshing two lives into one. (A story of inconsiderate criminals, late night conversations, holding hands, and a first kiss.)

Peter had thought that they were practically living together anyway but actually forcing them both into the same rooms has proven a lot more difficult than it should have. It really doesn’t help that any time they get to themselves (for example, time to fucking sleep) is broken by the ringing of the telephone and a gruffly apologetic voice on the other end of the line.

“You didn’t even put any toast on.” (He doesn’t whine.) Peter closes his eyes and swallows the dregs of tea, Morse makes a fucking awful cuppa this early in the morning, and when he resurfaces he gets a packet of Digestives thrust in his face, an irritated Morse holding them out.

“Come on.” (Morse does whine.) He turns on his heel and Peter watches him almost trip over the mess which hides one of the sofas. Enough really is e-fucking-nough.
