“Come on then, kiss me,” Merlin says, batting his eyelashes exaggeratedly for good measure. “That’s what a good fake boyfriend would do.”
“Maybe I’m a bad fake boyfriend,” Arthur responds archly.
“No, you’re not,” Merlin says, sensibly, “because then what would be the actual point of making up this stupid lie, and telling Gwen?”
Arthur looks up at him, swallows, and Merlin can tell he’s won. “Fine. I’ll kiss you. No promises about how eye-catching it will be.”
Merlin grins. “Believe me, every eye in the room will be on us.”
Arthur frowns. “That sounds ominous.”
“I know,” Merlin says, waggling his eyebrows.

Merlin is desperately pining for Gwaine, who does not seem to know or care about Merlin's feelings. Incensed on his best friend's behalf, Arthur offers to pretend to be Merlin's boyfriend for the night. Things unfold exactly as you would expect.

“So I take it you weren’t on a date last night?” Arthur asks.
“Hmm?” Merlin answers distractedly, eyes scanning the space around them.
“Last night. You said you had to leave because you were meeting somebody. You were going to have dinner with Guinevere and I to tell us about it.”
Merlin groans. “Bugger. I forgot I agreed to that.”
“So you are courting someone, then?”
“Not as such, no,” Merlin admits.
Arthur keeps pressing, disturbingly desperate to know for certain so that he can picture it more clearly, or, less likely, never think of it again.

Like- she’s met pretty girls before. Been in love with one, even. Never in her life, though, has she felt like she might have a heart attack because of some goddamn eye contact. She feels worse than when she thought she was going to die in that elevator, like a million times worse, which means she is probably going to actually die this time.
Is this how Steve feels all the time? Like, he just looks at a girl and that’s it, he can feel himself falling? Because she gets it. God, she actually understands why he’s such a dumbass if he feels this disarmed all the time.

known in my head as 'the adventuring au', a straggly series of stories where merlin is a wandering physician (nearly. sort of) and Arthur is a wandering knight (er. almost. kind of) and they run into each other.
It's Arthur/Merlin but quite background, and there are other background pairings too.
Lots of 'magic can do cool things' and Merlin is a competent badass. And there is a DOG. a very good dog <3
