Summary
When he had asked about how to proceed, his counselor had a glimmer in her eye, and said simply: “Just talk with him. Clear and to the point. Get to what matters.”
If only it was as simple as she put it. Coming down from the high that was the idea of his best friend acting as his savior instead of another struggling human being, riding the waves of his perceptions of their diminished friendship over those painful four years, replaying memories passed over and over again in his head as Basil ran his finger over scribbled photographs he didn’t have the heart to repair, but knew what their contents were by heart- it was a lot to get over. He really has tried to get better, but in quiet moments like these where Basil’s heart cried out pitifully for a gentle solace, he sometimes reverted to incorrect thoughts like "Sunny knows best."
Old habits die hard.

Thus far, the best Sunflower longfic. Fair warning: though this fic has fluff, it’s *mostly* unmitigated angst that succinctly explores Sunny and Basil’s deepest challenges, both individually and together. Extra points for actually addressing that Sunny Is Not Okay.

One of the earlier (and conversely more popular) Sunflower longfics, but by God did it set a high bar. It manages to portray the actual issues that need to be resolved for Sunflower to plausibly function while not having the (even if justified) outright depressing atmosphere shared by many other fics of its high-quality calibre. That’s not to say that it’s overly fluffy — there’s no shortage of angst — but it balances that angst with natural fluff and romance to logically continue both the original game’s themes, character relationships, and most of all tone.
