He wasn't supposed to find out. The second the words left his mother's mouth, she'd slapped her hands over it like she'd just uttered an ancient curse that has never been broken.
His father had watched in stony silence. Phillip's good at that. Watching, quietly, waiting for his wife to be done yelling to put her to bed and tell Buck to leave for a few days, after. To come back when he's gotten some sense into him.

“Have you figured it out yet?”
Oh. There's someone else in here. Behind him, whispering into his ear. A man, probably.
“Mmm—wha’?”
“Come on, Caffrey. Have you figured it out? The easy cleanup, the bait.”
“Y-You’re,” every word is a fight. His tongue is lead, sluggish, nothing but spoiled silver. It hurts. “Gonna kill me?”
The man clasps something around his neck, and the room darkens for a second.
“Obviously.”
Neal's eyes are open, but the man stays outside his field of vision. It's not like it’d do him any good—even if he’s found before he’s dead, he definitely has a concussion. The chances of him remembering any of this are slim.
“First, you’re going to suffer. Then you’re going to die, and suffer some more. And then, Neal, you’re going to rise… probably.”
He doesn't have any time to ruminate on what his captor means before the shock collar does its job.Or; the story of how Neal got turned.

Athena shows up at his place one evening, demanding an explanation as to why he and Bobby aren’t talking for the first time in years. Why her husband could only go off of hearsay when she asked whether Buck was alright when he hadn’t come over for their long-standing monthly dinner.
He tells her the truth.
Bobby had decided to leave, months ago, and he isn’t fine with that, actually, despite whatever he’d said in the immediate aftermath, and he needs some space. Some time to figure out how to move on from that.Or; Bobby decides to leave, almost dies, and stays after all. Buck doesn't know what to do with that. Things spiral from there.

Summary
Bobby dies. Or he doesn't. Either way, Buck has a hard time dealing with it.
Three standalone stories that are only connected through the fact that something happens to Bobby, and Buck tries to cope (and fumbles it so badly). And the fact that they belong together in my head.
1. "the opposite of being 'haunted by' seems awfully lonely":
Buck ignores four stages of grief and tries to jump right into acceptance. Too bad the thing he's accepting hasn't actually happened. Too bad he trips and lands ass first in denial about that part.
2. "when i die it'll be the smoke":
Buck ignores an important phonecall, spends time in El Paso, gets in a car crash, starts healing, and has a different part of his family come back to him.
3. "and i've tried having faith (but i'll rot like a dog)":
Buck scratches an itch. Eddie finds out. It doesn't go the way you would think. At least until he gets some new information from a friend.- Words:

Buck breathes out a silent laugh. He can definitely see Bobby being told that. He has a steadying presence. He's somehow able to make Buck feel like he's not being annoying when he goes on one of his many rants. Even when Buck's been told over and over again just how useless they are.
Buck shrugs, not sure where he'd even begin.
He turns to look at Bobby, wanting to shift the focus off of himself. “Do you like Christmas?”
