Summary
Fool of a Took seemed to be the enduring muttered mantra of the Fellowship, at least where Gandalf was concerned. It was entirely possible that the others thought it in their hearts– certainly not his fellow hobbits, but perhaps the Men that were sworn to follow Frodo into fire and flames, the grumbling dwarf, and the strange elf who spoke rarely and blinked even less. Pippin tried not to let it prick his heart: he knew this quest was something far beyond his understanding of the world, knew that truly realizing it would warp his brain in ways that could not be undone, knew that, after all, he was just a simple hobbit who had quite literally stumbled into saving the world. He could quell the pinpricks with those thoughts.
Before Moria, of course. Before knocking the helmet down the well. Before the balrog.
(In which Legolas has a bad time, Pippin has even worse time, and the fellowship finally gets around to talking about the balrog incident, though not before Legolas and Pippin run into trouble in the woods.)

Aragorn finds himself uneasy, traveling with Legolas in the world of Men.
The elf has plenty of experience, of course, handling those greedy stares in poorly-lit taverns. More than once, he’s told Aragorn so—keep your senses, he’ll whisper in that sing-song Sindarin which is so out of place surrounded by raucous laughter and the overpowering stench of ale. I’ve done this for a thousand more years than you have.
It’s different, though. After all, Strider has no issue blending into shadowy corners when he wishes to be unseen. Legolas rarely has the same option, for even under a dark cloak, with his golden hair tied up as to be unseen, there’s a certain air about an elf that mortals hardly ever miss.

A close call in a seedy tavern seems enough to confirm Aragorn’s worst convictions about the cruelty of man.
