Doesn’t know he’s doing it, course not, but Marty lays there next to him in the dark—the man’s only got one bed, ain’t no shame in that—and has to wonder about the Vietnam-grade shit Rust’s got playing in living technicolor in his head.

Summary
You’ve been here before. The new you, the one that smokes like a chimney but doesn’t drink or shoot up, has been here before; 2 or maybe 3 months prior, riddled with insomnia, performing the usual ritual of walking the streets until something made sense or pulled you in. You’d stood in the early morning haze and felt something unknown and external tug at the centre of you, like an unpleasant hook through the bellybutton.
Standing here now, deeper inside the carcass of this long abandoned warehouse, swarmed at the edges by RCM patrolmen, the pull comes again, unusual and unsettling. You don’t have enough words to speak it through with your partner yet, and you hadn’t wanted to think about it before either; for once the desire to explore had been unceremoniously extinguished.
You weren’t so lucky this time.

Summary
He hates the way Vash is looking at him, the disbelief mixed with hope. He doesn’t deserve to have Vash gazing at him at all, not after what he’s done. “You really think that?” Vash whispers, and Wolfwood equally hates the fact he’d ever believe otherwise. “I’m helping make a difference?”
He forces himself to meet Vash’s eyes again, keeping his voice as measured as he can. “It’s what you do, isn’t it?” he says, and there’s a hoarseness to it. “It’s what you always do.”
Having accepted his death, Wolfwood instead struggles with the fact he survived and is forced to find a new purpose. It takes a village to raise a child, but a repenting priest and an immigrant space explorer to raise a whole orphanage.

After surviving the bathroom, all Adam wants is to repress whatever he has to and get on with his life. Lawrence makes this difficult.
“Do you know,” Lawrence says, “What happened to the original Saint Laurence?”
“No?” Adam says, not sure where this is going. They pull up at a set of traffic lights and the red glow of them makes Lawrence look suddenly demonic.
“He was roasted on a gridiron over hot coals,” Lawrence says. “There’s a legend that halfway through he called one of his persecutors over and whispered something in his ear.”
“What was it?”
Lawrence looks over at him and grins, showing off his perfect white teeth. “I’m done on this side. Turn me over.”
Adam wrinkles up his nose. “Cute.”

I come back to this whenever I am looking for a deeper understanding of Hannibal's values. Seeing him interact with parts of the world that the show didn't touch upon does a great deal to build out his character.
