Out of the corner of his eye, Adam saw the purple petals of a persistent winter violet. He leaned forward and carefully picked it up, holding the stem gently between his fingers. A little farther down the road, he paused at a spot that seemed like every other spot along the road. But this was burned into Adam’s brain. He’d never forget this stretch of road for the rest of his life. Adam squatted, brushing the loose leaves and pine needles that had collected around the rock Adam had carefully laid there months ago. The browned petals of other flowers also littered the ground. He brushed those away too, sighing softly. Then, he tapped each of the pedals of the new flower before setting it on the stone.
