Summary
A rapid infection, the doctor later explains. The odds were less than 15% that Dazai’s body would be able to fight it off. And, even if he did miraculously survive that, walking would be unbelievably painful, with the breaks he sustained. It would hurt every step, and radiate up. He’d always need a mobility aid. Maybe it would turn out he’d need it amputated anyway.
The choice was logical, in Dazai’s mind. Keep your patient alive, albeit with a small cost, or risk him almost surely dying just to have him be in pain for the rest of his days with his mobility affected more than it would’ve if the limb was gone.
He understands it. If he was in the doctor’s shoes, he would’ve done the same.
Then why does he feel so bad?

Summary
Dazai looks nervous, and Chuuya can’t crack why. He definitely looks wrong, though, like he’s about to jump out of his skin.
Which does happen when something makes a particularly loud noise outside. Dazai’s head whips in that direction, his whole body tenses, and he clutches the plushie in his arms like letting it go would mean sudden death.
“You’re scared,” Chuuya realizes. “You’re scared of this, why didn’t you tell me?”

Summary
There’s a blue bracelet wrapped around his wrist. A series of small blue beads, smaller than his pinky nail, occasionally broken by a black bead. One of the beads in the center has a tiny star charm attached to it, silver and shimmering in the setting sunlight.
“The, uh, the nurse told me your birthday,” Chuuya mumbles. “‘s today, right?”
“Why do you care when it’s my birthday?” For the first time, Dazai asks without a touch of hostility or disdain. He’s confused, more than anything.

Summary
And there he is.
A small boy, a few years old at most. A wild nest of ginger hair on his head, curling in every possible direction, a smattering of freckles on his tiny face, and, though grainy, Dazai can see big blue eyes staring at the camera as the boy smiles a toothy grin and babbles back to his mother.
Around him is an aura of crimson, unmistakable. Dazai’d seen it thousands of times by now. He’d recognize it anywhere.
He doesn’t breathe as he watches as Chuuya, little toddler Chuuya, stand up on shaky legs and walk down the walls towards his mom, the red of Tainted Sorrow disappearing as he plops on the floor once again. -

Shoko does not have a large enough liver to metabolize the alcohol she needs to deal with these two chucklefucks.
Nor does she have a large enough heart to hold their hands and gently lead them in the right direction, which is why she just sucks down a mouthful of smoke, holds it in her lungs until it starts to burn, and then turns her head to the side and blows it all out in one harsh plume before she announces, “Satoru thinks you’re going to dump him.”
Suguru blanches. “He what?”
Shoko Ieiri cannot emphasize this enough, but - her best friends are idiots.

“I’m a kid. You can’t leave me alone. That’s unsafe.” Megumi counters, pulling the phone away from his ear. His argument might have done more to sway Suguru if his voice wasn’t so deadpan.
“I’ll leave you with the guards. They’ll look after you until your dad gets there.”
“I can’t talk to strangers.”
“What am I, then?”
“That was an emergency. Also, you’re not a stranger anymore.” Megumi blinks. “You’re Suguru.”
Suguru fights the urge to slam his head against the pole in the middle of the train carriage. Instead, he says: “Can I talk to your dad?”
Megumi loses his dad on the train, and finds a certain tall, raven-haired man instead.
