It's New Year's Eve, and magic is curling around their kind with a mischievous hope.
Sirius is in his — their, but Remus left already — flat, waiting, waiting, waiting. His leg bounces, and when it stops it, the other takes over; he's fighting his own dignity not to start pacing like a lion in a cage, eyes on the door, then on the chimney, attentive to any sign of an upcoming arrival.

Summary
It’s not that Remus doesn’t believe he’s loved; it’s more that he constantly feels on the edge of a precipice, walking on an invisible tightrope where falling would mean Sirius finally realizing he could find better somewhere else, and thus leaving him behind. It’s simple, really. Easy. It’s anxiety gnawing at his chest, at his stomach, constantly living with the anticipation of a heartbreak to come.
Remus is used to it.
He doesn’t mind. Not really.
Sirius does. Sirius minds a whole fucking lot.
