“Because he isn’t a jackass,” Older Mike retorts. “Oh, fu - I mean, shi - uh. I’m sorry." He looks at eleven-year-old Mike apologetically. "Excuse my language.”
Little Mike giggles. “You can say jackass.”
Older Mike smiles fondly. “Okay.” He turns back to Mike, scowling. “Jackass.”
“Why is he a jackass?” Little Mike pipes up.
“Yeah, why am I a jackass?” Mike asks indignantly. He can't help feeling like he's being ganged up on. By himself, no less.
“Do you want a list?” Older Mike growls.

“I know.” Steve agreed slowly, brows raised. “Carlton. Will, Robin and I met up a while back and he introduced us. Seems like a good kid. What about him?”
Mike felt like a fucking idiot.
Of course Steve didn’t get it. Why would Steve get it?
“I… I just…” How was Mike even meant to begin to talk about this? “It’s driving me crazy, man. I hate the guy.”

In the midst of the frantic, rhythmic motion, a small shift in the air, pulled Will from the blinding focus of sensation. His head lolled back against the pillows, his eyes, hazy and dilated, snapping open.
That’s when he saw her. Vanessa. Standing in the sliver of the doorway.
He didn't gasp. He didn't stop Mike, didn't even slow the relentless, punishing rhythm. There was no room for surprise, not now, not after all this time. He just stared at her with the quiet, triumphant knowledge that had settled deep within him years ago. It was a look of profound, quiet acknowledgement—a confirmation of the ending he had always known was their inevitable destination.
In that gaze, Will was telling her that her story with Mike was over, that he had merely held the place for him until the time was right.
The problem with Mike Wheeler was not that he didn't know how to exist in halves, but that he refused to let Will Byers exist without him. In 1991, Will Byers is an art student at NYU, living for the 10:00 PM calls and the thick, ink-stained manuscripts Mike sends from Bloomington. He has resigned himself to being the moon to Mike’s sun.

“Mike?” Will’s voice quivered, distracting him from his tests, “I don’t think we’re in your basement anymore?”
“Huh?” Mike stared gormlessly at Will whose head was swinging widely from point to point around the room.
“We’re not in your basement!” Will said, definitely sounding panicked at this point.
It took a moment for Will’s words to compute, his brain struggling to catch up as he regained his remaining mental facilities. Which would make more sense had he landed on his head, not his back.
Not being in his basement would explain the soft landing, white ceiling, and the spontaneous music at least. It saved him a broken back that’s for sure.
He slowly peeked around the room taking in the large double bed, sturdy set of drawers, and the overflowing bookcase tucked in the corner.
No way!
No freaking way!
He was back!

“Shut the fuck up.”, Will whispers because he can’t, he just can’t deal with Mike’s confusing ass right now. The soft light is illuminating Mike’s features, jaw carved out so perfectly, cheekbones high, eyes so dark Will feels like they’re swallowing him. “You are, too.”, he adds.
“Prettier than your lame boyfriend?”, Mike ask, voice somehow careful and urgent at the same time.
“Mike…” Will shivers a little, not sure what to do with himself. It’s ridiculous for Mike to actually believe Will has a boyfriend; if that were the case, he would’ve never stepped a foot into this bed. But somehow, Mike’s need to come out on top compared to the guy he is supposedly dating makes Will break out in goosebumps all over.
“That’s not a no.”, Mike remarks.
“That’s not a no.”, Will whispers, scared to move at all and break the moment.
A soft grin plays at the corner of Mike’s mouth, “Oh, yeah?”
“Yeah.”, Will nods, “But you knew that already.”

The guy shuts his phone off and reaches up to his ear to pull out an earbud. He shoots Will a grin, which does not help the whole blushing-crimson thing. “Hey,” he says coolly, and Will admires his composure while he wills the earth to collapse beneath him.
The guy quirks an eyebrow at Will when he doesn’t look away, then seems to take in his slightly disheveled and paint-stained appearance - he’d had his painting and drawing class just before he’d gone home, and had managed, as he always does, to get paint everywhere - because his smile grows a little softer, a little fonder. His shoulders relax against the bench, and Will lets out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. “You get sexiled?”
