Summary
A small ball hovered in her hand, shining with a silver-blue light. It floated there, getting brighter and brighter before dimming again. Wisps of cloud swirled at its center. It was pure magic.
And the breath was stolen from Arthur’s lungs.

Summary
Arthur is captured while scouting Cenred's territory and thrown into a dungeon cell. He's not alone—his cellmate is Merlin, a mysterious prisoner who somehow recognizes Arthur as royalty despite his disguise, and who tries to keep spirits light even as he's dragged away daily by guards.
Arthur quickly realizes something is terribly wrong. Merlin is dying, slowly drained by strange manacles and Cenred's hunger for magic. Over days and weeks, Arthur watches helplessly as the cycle repeats: recovery, torture, deterioration. “See,” Merlin said, still with that stubborn set to his jaw, but there was a slight tremble in his voice, now. “This is what you get for sticking your nose into things not concerning you.”
“Sticking–“ Arthur boggled. “Not concerning– YOU ALMOST DIED!” He bellowed from the top of his lungs.
“Whoo boy,” he heard Leon say from across the clearing.

Summary
“Well, this is the game. It is remarkably simple. You just have to steal Merlin’s neckerchief.” Immediately, complaints erupted from the knights.
“The neckerchief? He always wears it!”
“How are we supposed to steal it?”
“Merlin never takes it off for some reason — no way I’m going to risk my life and find out why!”
“Silence!” Arthur stared at the group, incredulous. “My knights, the most feared in the five realms, are terrified of my manservant?” They hung their heads in shame. “Even a squire probably could nick it off the idiot!”
“Is the squire still alive?” said a knight under his breath. Around him, his fellow brethren nodded their agreement, avoiding Arthur’s eye as he snorted.
“Merlin can be scary, Sire,” tried Lancelot. Arthur still looked like he seriously disagreed with the statement but after seeing the effect one pathetic coward had on a score of knights, he was forced to accept that yes, the Knights of Camelot feared Merlin the Buffoon.
Or 5 times Arthur gets blindsided by Merlin's ingenuity to stop the heists involving his neckerchief and 1 time Merlin gives up.

In Ealdor, you court someone by braiding their hair. Gwaine does not know this. Merlin knows Gwaine does not know this. Which means that braiding Gwaine's hair can be just because Merlin wants to, not because he is really courting the man.
He is really courting the man.

Summary
Lancelot raised himself and stood for a moment with his head bowed, as if gathering strength to face his prince’s displeasure. Then he straightened and followed the anxiously hovering servant. There was tension in his every movement, and Merlin had a distinct feeling that Lancelot wasn’t preparing an apology. No, he was readying for another (though quite different) battle.
Cursing silently, Merlin sprinted after them. He wasn’t going to stay on the sidelines for this one.«»«»«»
Merlin gets mistreated by a visiting noble, which leads to Lancelot losing (it) and having a crisis of purpose as a knight.

“Gwen.” Her own brother joins the show, scowling. “Stay out of this.”
Gwen doesn’t. “How dare someone like you,” she pokes at the direction of the knight, because if Leon thinks so lowly of Merlin, then she shan’t think highly of her once friend. “Speak to royalty like that?” Leon’s eyebrows are knitting together, which is strange, Gwen was under the impression he had found out long ago – but there is no time for that, because she needs to take it even further. “To your own Queen?” She stands tall and hopefully intimidating.
What is a snake-woman compared to two Queens?
In Gwen's humble opinion, a wench who doesn't stand a chance.Series

“Merlin, do you know this fiend? Has he threatened you into allowing him to take your appearance somehow?!”
“Yes, I do know him, but he hasn’t stolen my appearance or anything of the like. It is, technically, his face too.”
Arthur’s brows furrowed with confusion. What was Merlin going on about now?
“This really wasn’t the introduction I would have liked, but I guess it’s too late for that now. Everyone, I’d like you all to meet my twin brother, Emrys.”
~
After a ritual gone wrong, Merlin's soul is split into two different bodies: one with magic and one without. And because destiny apparently had it out for him, the knights catch both of them in the same place. Without any better explanation, Merlin blurts out the only believable lie that he can think of: that the two identical Merlins are twin brothers. -

Summary
It's a normal mission. There are his knights and then there are bandits. Even the arrow isn't shocking and that the druids are helping him doesn't seem too out of character for the peaceful tribe.
But then, from one moment to the next, Arthur is alone. The world around him doesn't make sense anymore. There are no druids and worst of all, no Merlin. Instead, he finds his mother. Magic is legal and everyone treats it as if it's all perfectly normal.
Because this is a timeline where his mother never died. Which means that Arthur doesn't exist. And for some reason, neither does Merlin.
And slowly, Arthur begins to piece together the lies that he'd been told.

It started subtly.
Merlin hummed while sweeping.
This alone would have raised eyebrows. Merlin didn’t hum. He sighed. He groaned. He made sarcastic comments under his breath and grumbled about “chamber pot distribution logistics.” But now he was humming.
Now he was smiling.
