Sam frowned, his heart aching for his boyfriend. "You didn't though," he pointed out. "You didn't bring her into the world. You just… what's the word? Inherited her."
Shane snorted. "That's one way of putting it," he said, a small smile momentarily tugging at his lips. "But that's not strictly true."

No matter how hard he tried, Sebastian couldn't pinpoint the moment he'd fallen in love with Sam. It came over him slowly, like the changing of seasons. One day you're wearing a t-shirt while your best friend drags you to yet another beach party, the next you notice the leaves are falling, and a faint scent of cinnamon lingers in the air whenever you pass the Saloon. For Sebastian, falling in love was like that: one day he and Sam were playing video games in his basement bedroom, the next, the sparkle in Sam's eyes when he won the latest round of Plumber Kart made his heart skip a beat.
But he never said anything, of course.

Summary
Set in the Time After Time universe. Maru returns to Pelican Town for Sebastian and Sam's commitment ceremony, and unexpectedly runs into her ex-wife.

As Maru descended the stairs leading from the community center to the town square, she recognized a figure walking toward the general store: Penny. She froze for a moment, wondering if she should head home, but before she could move, her ex-wife looked up and their eyes locked, and she realized it was too late.
"Hey," she greeted her once they were in earshot of each other, resisting the urge to fix her hair or fuss with her sweater. Stay calm, Maru, she instructed herself, fighting off a wave of complicated, painful emotions she had hoped to avoid on this trip home.
"Hey," Penny said, coolly, a polite smile on her face that didn't quite meet her eyes. She looked tired, liked she hadn't slept well in months.
Maru knew how she felt.
