“Just about. This was much easier at 22 than it is at 42, I’ll tell you that,” she responds wryly. She kisses his cheek, settles into her chair, pulling her knee up to her chest. He slides a cup of tea over the table to her. “You okay, sweetie? We missed you at Friday dinner last week.”
“Yeah, yeah.” He searches for an excuse. “Finals,” he offers, because really, how does one tell their Sandy-and-Kirsten that he didn’t come home because he met someone and kissed him and now the thought of spending the summer apart from him was insufferable and he’s been so happy that he didn’t even think of the family that followed him to Berkeley, and because everything in his life is a bargain he may have missed that they’re falling apart?

Coalition forces looked for him after the ambush, hopeful that if anyone could survive, it was a recon Marine. That hope flickered, day by day, until three months finally snuffed it out. Eventually they called it: Brad Colbert's final mission was a total loss.
Two weeks later, a FedEx envelope showed up at Nate's office. As the sealed note inside slid into Nate's hand, his gut dropped out.
He'd recognize the hastily-scrawled "Nate Fick" anywhere; Brad wrote this.

Jack had just stepped back onto the main floor when he clocked movement at the ambulance entrance, two guys hurrying in, the smaller one helping a guy with a sweatshirt covered in blood. But something was wrong, some unnamable instinct rising within Jack at the way they moved. It was too fluid, too controlled. Jack knew what the walking wounded looked like, had seen it for years, from war zones to bar fights. This wasn't the injured seeking help; this was men hunting.
Time slowed, Jack's heart rate spiking, the adrenaline dump casting everything in sharp relief—the full ED floor, patients plus shift change meaning twice the usual personnel were here.
Robby was here.
That thought got him moving, Jack approaching laterally. He got there right as the guns came out.

Tsunade walked around the desk and sat directly next to Iruka, turning both of their chairs with a casually powerful grasp. In the end they were facing each other, not the desk. He tried and failed to hold her gaze. She reached out and tipped his chin up, forcing him to look at her again. Another hit landed. This time it came from Iruka's left. It felt like it must have shattered bone, ribs grinding against each other in his chest, and Iruka bit his tongue almost until it bled to keep from crying out.
“Tell me, Iruka-sensei,” Tsunade said. “How long, exactly, have you been feeling Hatake Kakashi’s emotions?"
