This is Disco Elysium 2 and no one can tell me otherwise. Brilliant expansion on character arcs, lore, and themes. Pitch-perfect emulation of the game's style for Harry's POV (and extras!), and shifts in POV and deviations in style from that baseline that feel completely natural. Writing about emotional vulnerability so deft, thoughtful, and tender that it left me breathless on many occasions. Truly glorious.

So, hypothesis,” Darling said, arranging his fingers in a small rectangle as if he were a director getting the framing of a scene. He was stupidly perfect. Of course this man had been the missing ingredient for Alan. “We need to put ourselves into the next story,” he declared. “It’s the only way we get out.”
“We don’t have the Clicker,” he argued. It was a sticking point Tom had been wrestling for weeks or years. He couldn’t tell.
“Neither did you the first time!” Darling reminded him, grinning wide. He was so confident, so hopeful. “C’mon, think about it. You have so many more tools to add in now that I’m here. Variables in the experiment!”
Tom’s jaw worked. He nodded as he thought through the possibilities Darling meant. “Plot points and props,” he mused softly.
“We can choose the genre this time,” he panted in Tom’s ear. “Before we start. That could be…oh ho ho ho, that could be vital.”

The question startled Gale, who looked up from where he sat cross-legged in front of his tent, organizing his scrolls in preparation for their upcoming “visit” to the goblin camp. He’d given Astarion a wide berth since the revelation of his vampiric condition a few days earlier, so he was surprised to see the pale elf looming over him now, a peculiar expression on his face.
“You know,” Gale offered with a smile, “in my extensive journeys across manifold realms, I do believe that is not a question that I’ve ever been asked before. I honestly can’t decide whether or not I should be offended.”

Of the many side effects Gale has faced as a result of his whole “being physical host to an imminently destructive magical orb” problem, he somehow never anticipated his blood now apparently smelling irresistible to vampires (or at least, one particular vampire) to be one of them.

Summary
Gale was close enough to see Astarion’s nostrils flare as he took in a great, deep breath, chest heaving with the effort. His scarlet eyes gleamed in the moonlight, open so wide and staring with such rapt attention straight into his own. Through him. It made Gale feel small. And important, maybe.
Sometimes Gale has impossibly big feelings and the only way he knows to cope is with endless rumination and denial that basically amounts to sticking his fingers in his ears and shouting. Such a coping mechanism may prove inadequate for dealing with the walking, talking, plucked-from-his-guilty-conscience fantasy that is Astarion. And it doesn’t help that Astarion has a smile that makes his heart sing, along with being, probably, the first real friend he’s ever had. (Tressyms excluded, of course.)
