Except his whirlwind carried a hint of hot, stale wind, and his world was made of cardboard and flaky plaster, and--
A Greek chorus laughs at him. Mari is everything he shouldn't want. The audience is tapping an impatient foot.
Hero doesn't mind. He's used to it.

“This looks kinda old. But that must mean it got a lot of good use! Lots of summers and beach trips probably,” Basil says. Somehow, the daisy is still neatly resting in its place on Basil’s head. He keeps catching himself looking at Basil’s hair. He wants to mess it up. He wants to touch it. He wants to touch Basil.
“Phil. His name was Phil, and he liked jet skis,” Sunny continues. He notices the way Basil scrunches up his face, trying to stifle another giggle. Cute. So cute.
“Oh yeah? So why did he return it then? This looks perfect for a jet ski ride, don’t you think?” Basil replies, holding up the shirt.
“He exploded.” Basil chokes.

In which Basil takes Sunny to shop at a thrift store to reconnect, unwind, and let the fluff flow after months without really hanging out. Feelings like theirs don't just fade on a whim, and as they try on wacky outifts and tell wackier stories, they'll realize just how much they've missed each other's company.

Or, five times Xiao watches his school’s resident Cupid help others find love, and one time he manages to catch Cupid himself.

There were several issues that Xiao immediately took with Ningguang’s proposition for him to produce for Barbatos: his other artists had upcoming comebacks and year-end stages that required his attention, he was overworked enough as it were already, and Ningguang was not exactly someone he was looking to do any favors for.
While her persistence to overlook all this was one matter, nothing aggravated him more than Ningguang completely ignoring the obstinate fact that he. doesn’t. work. with. idols.
And as far as Xiao was concerned, nothing was ever going to change that.
But all that glitters is not gold, and stage lights shine brighter than stars. There’s a lot more to a person than what hides behind the faces that they wear. It takes strength to face off against the delusions in the name of values and beliefs, but it is a different type of strength that it takes to come to face with the truth.
And as it turns out, the truth is that perhaps it wasn’t Barbatos who Xiao needed to confront so much as it was himself.

Summary
Basil woke up at the hospital to find Sunny confessing the truth to his friends. He hoped that it was over, that they could finally be happy again, but Sunny dropped off the face of the Earth. Now, it was up to Basil to handle the fallout and future.
Forgiveness would come slower from some than others, and the road ahead was long, but it was there—and Basil wouldn't be alone this time.
(A post-canon Basil-centric sunflower fic focused on a realistic depiction of the healing process, exploring the relationships within the friend group (mainly Basil's relationships), and ending my brainrot. I cannot exaggerate how terrible the first few chapters are compared to the later ones; please give this a chance lol.)
