Summary
On the day Buck learns he was someone else's failed homegrown defense system, a handsome stranger keeps him company, keeps him distracted, keeps him laughing, and then keeps him safe.
The guy tilts his head. "Rough day?"
"Rough life," Buck sighs, utterly pathetic, and immediately feels like he's betrayed every single one of his friends for even saying it. "No, that's—that was really ungrateful. My life isn't—I-I have a good life. I just learned something today about my parents that, uh, clarified a few things for me about our relationship. It... wasn't great."
The guy taps his finger against the bottle of Warsteiner in his hand, flaying Buck from head to toe with his deep, considering stare, then he walks around the bar until he's only two chairs away. Buck's heart starts pounding so hard it's probably visible through his shirt.
He already knows what's coming: C'mon, it can't be that bad. You should talk it out with them. You're being too hard on them. They're your parents, they love you.
But the guy must be reading a different script, because he says simply, kindly, "I'm sorry. That really sucks."

Summary
It was his most prominent memory of his childhood. Her complaints over his untidy appearance, as if he was ruining their perfect family image. As if Maddie running as soon as she could didn’t stain that. Because Buck—Evan—being a ‘waste of potential’ and a disappointment really put their family on the map of outstanding. The wooden floors of his childhood house were thick, but never solid enough to muffle the acidic words his mother had for him.
His clothes weren’t spotless. He was always covered in blood, scrapes or bruises. The constant ER visits, neighbours whispering over the rowdy and reckless Buckley child. But his curly hair was the cherry on the shit-pie. In his mother’s eyes that was Buck’s—Evan’s—greatest sin. At least, for twenty-nine years, he thought it was.
Bobby takes Buck home after "Buck Begins" and finds out he has curly hair. They talk about it, in a roundabout way.

Clary was sitting on the edge of the roof’s railing, her feet swinging and dangling into the air. She looked out towards the skyline with a crease in her brow. Alec took a couple of steps towards her, trying to step louder with his feet so he didn’t startle her. He came up right next to her before she said anything.
“Hi Alec,” she said, the hands in her lap suddenly very interesting. “I activated my equilibrium rune. Don’t worry.”
“I wasn’t worried. You know your runes better than a lot of us,” Alec replied, taking out his stele and running it over his own equilibrium rune behind his right shoulder.

Tommy couldn’t believe the letters he saw on the screen of his phone. They were just letters, just letters in a particular combination that held meaning. The meaning being that Evan Buckley wanted to talk to him. The audacity of those letters. The audacity of Evan Buckley to be trying to contact him after what had happened between them.
